I spent several weeks in Salamanca and the Plaza Mayor was the place to be. I visited many of the ice-cream stands here as well as several restaurants, but the real action is to be had right in the center. Sitting and talking or strolling around the Plaza Mayor is a daily pasttime for most citizens of the town. You can talk, people watch, watch a dance performance/practice, find someone to play chess with, or even nap here. The whole town comes out for soccer games. Big screen tvs are set up at each corner and extension cords are run from apartments to power them. Everyone cheers and moans together. The plaza is also where citizens gather to protest government policies--local or national.
If you are going to spend time in Salamanca and want to get to know the people of Salamanca, you will want to spend time in the heart of the town--the Plaza Mayor.
