“Beautiful Plaza”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 July 2014

Great plaza with busts of Spanish kings and Franco. At night it was lit beautifully with strolling groups of musicians which made it fun and surrounded by shops and restaurants and ice cream. No dislikes well worth the visit.

“lovely, lively area”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 July 2014

This plaza was everything I imagined from what i had read. Beautiful, light & lively.. We compared it with that in Madrid. Salamanca´s Plaza Mayor (known as the living room of the Salmantinos) is more of a square than the one in Madrid which is slightly on the rectangular side. Ma.drid´s has more colour in the buildings. We thought that maybe the beauty of the Plaza Mayor in Salamanca is in its simplicity & the lesser colour than it´s cousin in the capital. Less is more for sure. The Salamancan Plaza Mayor is of baroque style & constructed in the 18th century. Able to hold up to twenty thousand people, they would have once witnessed bullfights but nowadays they gather to attend a concert. It is said to be one of the finest squares in Europe. For architectural & histofry buffs then this is a must to visit

“The Heart of Town”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 July 2014

The Plaza Mayor IS the place to go in Salamanca if you want to catch the spirit of town. Once the setting for bullfights, now it is the core of Salamanca, bustling with people, activity, busy restaurants and bars, street shows, a meeting place for local people and students. Built in the golden stone abundant in the area, it gets a magic of its own thorughout the different times of the day, according to the natural light. This is a place which gives no disappointment to all those who converge to it for a stroll, a typically Spanish "tapas" meal or simply to hang around looking at all the activity going on.

“stunning architecture”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 July 2014

I absolutely loved the Plaza Mayor in Salamanca. In my opinion, far superior to the one in Madrid. i felt safe here, unlike Madrid. We were here on the night England lost to Uruguay in the 2014 Word Cup and whilst i am not a football fan, the atmosphere was fantastic. All the bars had large tv screens outside their seating areas in the square itself and when dusk fell and the square lit up, there was an audible gasp from the crowd.

I loved the fell of the place, the history, the architecture, all the plaques around the square depicting Spanish kings and queens and even General Franco and our very own Wellington.

The bars were not extortionately priced and we found seating easily despite it being a Thursday and a friday evening on the longest day of the year. Absolutely loved it and it is not to be missed if visiting Salamanca.
