“Modern elegance in historical setting”
Reviewed 3 November 2012

We stayed here the night before leaving on our walk to Santiago along the via de la plata. We arrived early which was no problem and were offered efficient and friendly service. The hotel is chocolate dark inside, with a nice welcoming lounge / foyer area. The room on the second floor was small, quiet and comfortable. Excellent shower and bathroom - though the small glass half scrren over the tub means water goes everywhere. Comfortable queen size bed with good firm pillows. Only minus was the clunky glass and aluminium cupboard space which has doors that are hard to slide. Good breakfast by spanish standards in the basement, though like all breakfast rooms in spain is over heated when its cold outside. Nice location of course and slightly away from the noisy foot traffic up towards the plaza mayor. Recommended highly at the price.

Room Tip: Room at the back of the hotel, facing south would be quieter

This hotel is one of the best situated I have ever experienced.

To give background - I studied in Salamanca and lived in grotty student digs 6 years ago but returned there to show my mother this amazing town in September.

This hotel is directly opposite the unbelievably beautiful cathedral but despite there being a huge festival on together with the usual throngs of tourists - this hotel was as quiet as a mouse.

Which meant you had all the joys of being in the thick of it, without the stress of not being able to sleep.

We didn't eat there - it doesn't exactly have an rockin restaurant or much of a bar to speak of. But if all you want is a really nice base to explore the town - then this is perfect. The sister hotel round the corner has a nicer lobby and terrace that's for sure - but it is also set by a main road.

Room Tip: Try to get a room at the back of the hotel. Views over the countryside.

We booked for one night at short notice on our trip through this part of Spain based on Trip Advisor reviews and were not disappointed. it was a little tricky finding the hotel (we found our Sat nav was not reliable in the old city centres in Europe even though it was a new car) but after a couple of stops to ask directions we found it and used the underground parking. Even though we had booked a standard room, we were given a room facing the cathedral with a lovely balcony which was quiet at night. The room was very tastefully decorated and comfortable. The breakfast buffet was excellent and beautifully presented.
Although the main square was about 10 minutes walk there were plenty of good restaurants between the hotel and the main plaza.
Overall we felt this hotel was excellent value and would definitely recommend staying here.

We upgraded our room to one facing the small square on front of the hotel. This was a super room. We could see street activity but it is a very quiet area at night. The lighted buildings were an added treat out our small balcony.

Our room was spacious and worked really well. Absolutely no complaints. The location is great. An easy walk to the sights and the main plaza

Breakfast was wonderful too. It includes a wide range of foods and includes eggs or omelets cooked to order, along with bacon or sausage.

This hotel was easily the beat we experienced in Spain and made our stay in Salamanca all the more magical.

We booked our room months in advance at a rate of 80 euros a night which was excellent value.

Parking is avaliable in the underground garage (16.75 euros per night). We had no problems with our sat nav finding the correct roads but there are also signs to the hotel. If you have a large car it will be very tight getting into the car park. Compared to some other hotels in town the route to this hotel is down quiet roads so greats if you are a nervous driver but the roads are narrow so know the width of your car

As suggested by another reviewer we asked for a room on the 2nd floor overlooking the cathedral, we did get a fantastic view and a small patio however there was no furniture to sit outside but it was nice enought to sit with the door open however during the day people who are on the cathedral tour will be able to see in your room if you have the curtains open.

The hotels is in an excellent location opposite the cathedral and near the university. It is only a short 5 minute walk from places to eat and you can easily walk to all other attractions. It is lovely to hear the cathedral bells but don't worry they do not chime during the night and only start to chime again at 9am

We did not eat in the hotel, there are so many places to eat in Salamanca, even for breakfast, that you will be spoilt for choice.

Rooms are well appointed although we did have two very squeaky single beds pushed together. The room safe, hair drier, mini bar, soaps etc

Nice hotel and worth the money if you book in advance.

NH Puerta de la Catedral was booked based on TripAdvisor comments. Our room had a balcony with a view of the cathedral next door - yes next door - out the front door and 40 meters to the cathedral museum and first level tower. The hotel staff were helpful, WiFi was free (daily password change - inspite of what is advertised), A/C, safe, and modest but clean, newish rooms. Parking is available (and bookable) - access from a nearby street but with direct entry to the hotel foyer to and from the car park.

The room is directly over one of the streets leading to the Cathedral and was buzzy early and late - however it was worth it when two "buskers" came by and played 2 parts of Vivaldi's Four Seasons with 2 violins and orchestral accompaniment - delightful.

Salamanca is a wonderful place to visit - a 13th century University town with many sights. The Plaza Mayor was a buzz of activity and the pedestrian streets around we're full of people until late at night - it was a festival week so this may be atypical.

Be sure to visit the Old Cathedral - tickets sold on the right when you enter the New Cathedral - it is wonderful to see how they added the New Cathedral to this very old structure.

Room Tip: Pay the extra for a room with a view

Having read tripadvisor reviews we requested a room with a cathederal view. We were told there would be a supplement but in fact they didn't charge us. The room was great with a terrace so close to the cathederal that you could almost touch the walls. The hotel is so central but really quite quiet because it is on a plaza around the back of the main entrance to the cathederal. We used the carpark to the hotel, costs 15 euros a day but convenient for us. Doubt you can find a better placed hotel in salamanca
