5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 November 2011

We chose this hotel because of it's membership of the Small Luxury Hotels group. The hotel has modern decor, friendly and efficient staff, a cool lounge and a small and excellent Michelin-starred restaurant.

The breakfasts are fantastic, served by a wonderful lady - Pila(?) of Pamplona is one of those true gems that you can strike in a small hotel - and we unreservedly recommend the lightly poached egg on a base of cheese, bread crumb and potato gratin. Coffee was served without request and always as preferred - another sign of a great hotel and staff.

The ABaC is not perfect - not enough towels in the room, the lounge / bar was a bit disorganized, the spa is just average and the room shower and toilet are a bit too trendy / gloomy. That said, this is one of the best small hotel experiences we have had.

ABaC is located slightly out of town, although don't let this put you off - the tourist bus and Metro leave from right outside the gated walls of the hotel. Despite the busy roads surrounding the hotel, the rooms are brillliantly quiet due to good double glazing and the ultra modern appliances (B&O tv and Nespresso machine) really suit the decor. The rain-shower is a nice touch in the bathroom.

Dinner in the hotel was excellent - not cheap of course, although not ridiculous - a must do experience. We left the wine selections to the sommelier and he produced some great and unusual wines by the glass.

Overall the ABaC is well worth experiencing. Don't choose if it you prefer cheap, large and impersonal hotels - this is one for those seeking luxury, personal attention, great food and wine - and realistic enough to know that perfection does not come along very often.

Room Tip: If you can afford it go for one of the suites - we had the Deluxe corner room and it was great.

ABAC hotel has a very nice property and restaurant going for it, but as it happens so many times with hotels these days, it fails to give a 5 stars experiences or a true boutique experience.

To start with the more positive side of ABAC, i can tell you that it is a pretty property, and it really feels exclusive due to it having only 15 rooms and a very posh restaurant. We had 2 rooms and they were both beautiful and comfortable. The breakfast was very very good. It is served every morning by the same non English speaker lady, but she is so nice and attentive it doesnt really matter.

We had dinner at the restaurant one evening to celebrate my birthday and the tasting meal was excellent and very creative and the service was also excellent, as it should be for a EUR150 per person meal, not including alcohol.

For the less positive side, The showers in both our rooms had a far from good water pressure and they have a design error that makes the water leak from the shower inside the bathroom.

They don't have a policy of a bell boy in the entrance. When you arrive - no one is there to welcome you and to help with your bags / shopping bags.

The location is not central at all and you need a 10 min taxi drive to go to or back to the hotel.

But to top it all, were these two service related incidents that really showed me the true colors of this hotel and its dissapointing service. The hotel did not acknoledge that it was my birthday in any way and did nothing at all to make this special day memorable for me. Our party had two rooms booked for 3 nights each, we spent over a EUR1000 at the restaurant and nothing at all.

And when i checked in i asked the lady to charge a different card then the one i made the reservation with. She took the new card number and assured me it was done. Of course at check out i found out that this was not done and that the wrong card was charged. This took way too much time - and attitude - to correct. The dealing with Marien the hotel manager was not pleasant, and she didn't take responsibility for their error.

So this is not a true class act. Next time i'll try the new and amazingly-looking Mandarin Oriental Barcelona.

Dear guest,

First of all I want to thank you for your review, we really appreciate your comments and your opinion helps us to improve.
After reading your review I’m feeling like I didn’t take enough care about you during your stay in ABaC and you can be sure that the well-being of our guests is the most important for me! I’m really sorry that you didn’t feel satisfied with your stay!
I'm also sorry that we didn't notice that it was your birthday since we have a guest policy which consists in looking after the birth date of our guests in their passport at the check-in to can have some detail with them in case they are celebrating their birthday during their stay with us. I already spoke with the person who cared about your check-in to insure that this will not happen again. Referring to the charge made on the credit card you gave at the booking I spoke with the person in charge of that and all what I can say is that it was a misunderstand since she thought that you wants to pay the extras with the card you gave at your check-in.
I’m really surprised to read in your review that you had problems with your shower, why didn’t you notice us that the water leaks to the bathroom? I had moved you to another room without problems!

To finish you should know that we will be delighted to can welcome you again in ABaC Restaurant & Hotel and for that occasion we’re pleased to let you know that you will enjoy a massage or treatment by Elemis in our Spa as a present for the birthday you had during your last stay in ABaC.

Yours sincerely,

Marién Iñigo Schneider

Wonderful small hotel off the beaten track. A Greta refuge from the masses and mobs in central Barcelona. We just returned and loved it. The dinner was magical! The hosts were wonderful. It's refreshing to order ice and have it delivered in minutes. Free wi-fi also. About a 10 minute ride to central Barcelona. I would go back.

Took my wife here for her birthday and we stayed in the fantastic penthouse suite which came complete with it's own private terrace overlooking the mountains and outdoor jacuzzi.
Staff are excellent and we were welcomed in from the heat of Barcelona with a glass of Cava whilst we checked in. We were given a full and detailed tour of the hotel and it's facilities as well as getting help booking tickets for the sagrada familia and printing our boarding passes.
We ate in the restaurant on the first night which is a great experience and the service was faultless.
One good tip is to sign up to the small luxury hotels of the world club (this is free) and then book the hotel room through there as you get free breakfast every morning with the membership. Ours was brought to our terrace complete with table linen and everything we needed.
Taxis are surprisingly reasonable in Barca and the trip to the airport is €25 (although beware the hotel's transfer service is around €80 as it's limousine service).
Rooms have iPads and B&O TVs but it would be nice if they could include an iPod dock or AppleTV to allow music and films to be played through the system.
Mini-bar is predictably expensive and as has been commented previously, the room service menu is abysmal for a hotel of this standard. We used it once - had two chicken burgers which arrived with no bun and were of the quality you would expect from a Lidl freezer cabinet. Still, none of this is enough to detract from what is a fantastic hotel.
Park Guell is a 20min walk, the old tram stops right outside to go to Mt Tibidabo and the Av Tibidabo metro station is right opposite and takes 15mins into the centre of town (although it only runs every 15mins or so)

My wife and I stayed 7 nights at the ABaC and loved it. We stayed in the standard room, which felt better than standard.

The location is away from the hustle and bustle of the central city, but only an 8 minute metro ride way. The trains come every 6-7 minutes or so. There is a tourist bus stop right outside the hotel. The Plaza Kennedy neighborhood is nice to walk around. We found a local pizza/tapas that we couldn't resist going back to multiple times.

The hotel has a very intimate feel. The breakfast is great and served by a lovely lady. The staff were very helpful. Marien in particular was great. They happily arranged tickets to the theatre and La Sagrada Familia - and gave us some great tips along the way.
