“Gorgeous Boutique Hotel with Excellent Service”
Reviewed 7 January 2012

A super modern hotel with luxurious touches such as Bang and Olufsen electronics, Hermes products, and there even is a cartridge coffee maker in the room. Since the hotel premise was locked, we actually had difficulty checking in at 1300. This was due to a malfunction of the doorbell at both entrances. The staff were super apologetic about the incident and from there our stay was good. We stayed in the Superior Room with our own large private balcony. The balcony square footage might have been bigger than the room itself. The bathroom had a separate bath with rain shower. And when I say rain shower I mean a 2 ft x 2 ft gush of water coming down from the ceiling! We did have some difficulty figuring out how to adjust the temperature, but once that was resolved it was heaven.

We ate at the newly upgraded 2 Michelin star restaurant and it was absolutely divine. I have eaten at many Michelin rated restaurants, including the 3 star Per Se in New York and the ABAC restaurant might have been out best dining experience ever. In addition to the whimsical delicious food, the restaurant was able to fully accommodate my girlfriend's dietary restrictions.

We only had one minor gripe that ironically has to do with the heavy sound-proofing of the hotel. The heavy and numerous doors that it takes to get to your room really isolate the sound well, however, they slam and make a loud noise after each one is opened. This means that when another guest leaves their room, especially with at an adjacent floor, we hear every door slam on their way out. I don't know how much the hotel can do to fix this but again it's just a minor detail.

All in all we had a wonderful stay and we will definitely be back to the ABAC for both the stay, the warm, friendly, excellent staff, and the food.

I stayed at ABACat the end of September for 6 days and although this review is a little late I think it is worth mentioning how wondering the experience of staying there was. I left thinking that, service is excellent, hotel is unique, small but comfortable, luxurious, quiet and location, convenient and peaceful. Truly a modern boutique hotel with an excellent restaurant and awesome and attentive staff.

SERVICE

I have to praise Marien and her team. She made us feel so welcomed from the moment we stepped foot into ABAC. We really appreciate the awesome restuarant recommendations that was provided as the suggested places for local food were excellent choices. Also, they will highlight all the `must visit' places for which I found 6 days was not enough. For information, you can approach anyone of their staff and rest assured, they will try their best to accede to your request.

Turn down service is always prompt and housekeeping is had been consistent throughout the 6 days spent. Hermes amenities are used and for added touch of detail, his and hers amenity boxes are provided.

ROOMS

The deluxe room we had was spacious. Had separate walk in closets and bath areas. Lighting is automated so if there is movement in the room, you will have lights on. Best part of it, there are four types of lighting to choose from. The rain bath is awesome (so huge, you could call is a rain thunderstorm bath). The glass used for toilet walls are all one way mirrors. They also have choices of DVDs if you cannot find anything exciting to do in Barcelona (which is highly unlikely).

LOCATION

As other reviewers have mentioned, the location is 7 train stations away (approximately 7 to 10 minutes) and the train station is just outside the hotel. There is also the Tourist Buses that take you around different routes right outside the hotel's main entrance. On Sundays (or was in Saturdays - check with the hotel) the funicular train up to one of the peaks overlooking Barcelona runs and this is also located just outside the hotel.

The neighbourhood the hotel is nice is clean and nice. There are lots of eateries around the hotel that open very early in the morning so you won't starve. If you don't want to stay in the noise around Passag then this is an awesome location. Very convenient, quiet and safe.

Security at the hotel is tight so you need not worry.

SPA and LOUNGE AREAS

The hotel has a spa and lounge area that is both relaxed and comfortable. Massages are also available. I tried the steam room and pools, which is open 24hours. Wished the steam bath was a little hotter though.

RESTAURANT

Well, they did not earn a michelin star for no reason. They also have an impressive wine list. Do give it a try.

Do consider ABAC as you will not be dissapointed. Barcelona as a whole truly amazing!

We chose this hotel because of it's membership of the Small Luxury Hotels group. The hotel has modern decor, friendly and efficient staff, a cool lounge and a small and excellent Michelin-starred restaurant.

The breakfasts are fantastic, served by a wonderful lady - Pila(?) of Pamplona is one of those true gems that you can strike in a small hotel - and we unreservedly recommend the lightly poached egg on a base of cheese, bread crumb and potato gratin. Coffee was served without request and always as preferred - another sign of a great hotel and staff.

The ABaC is not perfect - not enough towels in the room, the lounge / bar was a bit disorganized, the spa is just average and the room shower and toilet are a bit too trendy / gloomy. That said, this is one of the best small hotel experiences we have had.

ABaC is located slightly out of town, although don't let this put you off - the tourist bus and Metro leave from right outside the gated walls of the hotel. Despite the busy roads surrounding the hotel, the rooms are brillliantly quiet due to good double glazing and the ultra modern appliances (B&O tv and Nespresso machine) really suit the decor. The rain-shower is a nice touch in the bathroom.

Dinner in the hotel was excellent - not cheap of course, although not ridiculous - a must do experience. We left the wine selections to the sommelier and he produced some great and unusual wines by the glass.

Overall the ABaC is well worth experiencing. Don't choose if it you prefer cheap, large and impersonal hotels - this is one for those seeking luxury, personal attention, great food and wine - and realistic enough to know that perfection does not come along very often.

Room Tip: If you can afford it go for one of the suites - we had the Deluxe corner room and it was great.

ABAC hotel has a very nice property and restaurant going for it, but as it happens so many times with hotels these days, it fails to give a 5 stars experiences or a true boutique experience.

To start with the more positive side of ABAC, i can tell you that it is a pretty property, and it really feels exclusive due to it having only 15 rooms and a very posh restaurant. We had 2 rooms and they were both beautiful and comfortable. The breakfast was very very good. It is served every morning by the same non English speaker lady, but she is so nice and attentive it doesnt really matter.

We had dinner at the restaurant one evening to celebrate my birthday and the tasting meal was excellent and very creative and the service was also excellent, as it should be for a EUR150 per person meal, not including alcohol.

For the less positive side, The showers in both our rooms had a far from good water pressure and they have a design error that makes the water leak from the shower inside the bathroom.

They don't have a policy of a bell boy in the entrance. When you arrive - no one is there to welcome you and to help with your bags / shopping bags.

The location is not central at all and you need a 10 min taxi drive to go to or back to the hotel.

But to top it all, were these two service related incidents that really showed me the true colors of this hotel and its dissapointing service. The hotel did not acknoledge that it was my birthday in any way and did nothing at all to make this special day memorable for me. Our party had two rooms booked for 3 nights each, we spent over a EUR1000 at the restaurant and nothing at all.

And when i checked in i asked the lady to charge a different card then the one i made the reservation with. She took the new card number and assured me it was done. Of course at check out i found out that this was not done and that the wrong card was charged. This took way too much time - and attitude - to correct. The dealing with Marien the hotel manager was not pleasant, and she didn't take responsibility for their error.

So this is not a true class act. Next time i'll try the new and amazingly-looking Mandarin Oriental Barcelona.

Dear guest,

First of all I want to thank you for your review, we really appreciate your comments and your opinion helps us to improve.
After reading your review I’m feeling like I didn’t take enough care about you during your stay in ABaC and you can be sure that the well-being of our guests is the most important for me! I’m really sorry that you didn’t feel satisfied with your stay!
I'm also sorry that we didn't notice that it was your birthday since we have a guest policy which consists in looking after the birth date of our guests in their passport at the check-in to can have some detail with them in case they are celebrating their birthday during their stay with us. I already spoke with the person who cared about your check-in to insure that this will not happen again. Referring to the charge made on the credit card you gave at the booking I spoke with the person in charge of that and all what I can say is that it was a misunderstand since she thought that you wants to pay the extras with the card you gave at your check-in.
I’m really surprised to read in your review that you had problems with your shower, why didn’t you notice us that the water leaks to the bathroom? I had moved you to another room without problems!

To finish you should know that we will be delighted to can welcome you again in ABaC Restaurant & Hotel and for that occasion we’re pleased to let you know that you will enjoy a massage or treatment by Elemis in our Spa as a present for the birthday you had during your last stay in ABaC.

Yours sincerely,

Marién Iñigo Schneider

Wonderful small hotel off the beaten track. A Greta refuge from the masses and mobs in central Barcelona. We just returned and loved it. The dinner was magical! The hosts were wonderful. It's refreshing to order ice and have it delivered in minutes. Free wi-fi also. About a 10 minute ride to central Barcelona. I would go back.
