I chose this hotel due to the good reviews, and the fact my wife is a chef, and we noted its Michelin rating. This was a special treat for Valentines. A few items are worth noting, especially as the hotel rates can be as much as 1000 Euros per night. At this level you expect impeccable service, and faultless attention to detail. In this instance I have to say it was not perfect.
The room was very nice, and at the special rate of 300 Euros a night was ok value. The mini bar prices are very high, 4.50 for a coke! The hotel did a great welcome job, and showed us everything, but neglected to explain the digital option on the TV that gave even more channels on top of the usual fair of 3 English news channels. A minor niggle that we didn’t discover until the day we checked out!
The initial disappointments however came from the restaurant service. This was a 2 star establishment, but recently lost a star due to the change of Chef. The service however, was not 2 star. Several times glasses were not replenished with water until we attracted the attention of the waiter, and once the meal was over we were simply ignored, and despite telling one waiter we were ready to leave, we were left to sit. Eventually we got up to leave and had to walk to the cloakroom to retrieve a jacket, and only at this point did people come running to help us.
This is not 5 star hotel, or multi starred Michelin levels, as anyone who eats/stays at this level will agree. Breakfast on the 2nd day went well down hill. When we arrived at the breakfast room, there were many uncleared tables, and we chose the only clean table in the room. After a 10 minute wait we were initially approached for our order. Eggs were overcooked, and the overall service was very poor, due mainly to the fact they had 1 girl waiting 10 tables. Several guests had to complain and go in search of the waiter to get tables cleared, and to get their orders I for breakfast. At this point the reception got involved in clearing dirty dishes.
Perhaps the hotel may be struggling a bit, hence the cheaper rates, and less than perfect service?
When we checked in, we were told we could keep the room for the whole day on the day of checkout. When we left for the days exploring on our final day, we again discussed this with reception, and all was OK’d. However, when we returned we found our access to the hotel had been revoked, and our baggage had been removed from the room rather unceremoniously, and we had to resort to sorting it out in the lobby! At some insistence the staff member on duty called the manager, who incidentally was the lady who had checked us in and made the offer of the room use on the day of checkout. She was very apologetic, and did indeed make a 200 Euro refund (about 20%), and provided complimentary tea and coffee, and the use of a room to freshen up.
Finally, during our stay, we had asked several questions which were diligently noted down by reception, but alas they never got back to us.
So all in all, some disappointments at this level, and ones that should be addressed by the hotel. Not reasons to stay away, but maybe a consideration when picking an expensive room, and if you have high expectations at this level of accomodation and dining. Guy Savroy it is not!
