HLG CityPark Pelayo Hotel
Ranked #360 of 513 Hotels in Barcelona
Reviewed 13 October 2009

We stayed in the Citypark Pelayo in October 2009 and cannot recommend it highly enough. As other reviewers have said, if you didn’t know, you would not think it was a 2 star hotel. It has features you might only find in a 3 star or above such as a fridge, secure safe in the rooms, hairdryer, espresso machine and a few toiletries. The hotel has a clean, modern feel and our room (405) including the bathroom was very clean. There was a good shower and towels were replaced daily (although the bed linen wasn’t which was fine). The air conditioning was very effective.

The fact that breakfast is part of the deal is very convenient and the spread itself is good (bread, meats, cheese, fruit, yoghurts, cornflakes, tea, coffee, juice) but may get tedious if you are staying longer than a few nights. If you are, my tip would be to go to the Carrefour supermarket on La Rambla and maybe buy a cereal of your choice to take down to breakfast. You might also want to get some espresso sachets, etc for the machine in your room (teabags work fine it in too!) A couple are provided but you might want more than one cup a day each.

By far the best thing about the Citypark is its location. It is practically on top of the Universtat Metro station so you can get to pretty much anywhere you want. You can buy 1, 2, 3 and 4 day travelcards (2 days costs about 10 euros) which means your travel is taken care of. The hotel is also just near the university square with a couple of reasonably priced student café bars doing great food (paella 10 euros). The area feels more studenty than touristy and there is a lovely café culture atmosphere. You are also only a few minutes walk (or a metro stop) from La Rambla. A taxi rank and the airport bus are nearby for the return journey to the airport.

If we have any complaints, they are only minor ones – it would have been good to have one English speaking TV channel and our double room was slightly small which wasn’t a major problem for us as we aren’t large people. Our room also faced the street and we did hear traffic noise at night so a room at the back or some earplugs would be a good idea! Some proper cups rather than plastic ones for the coffee machine would have been nice.

This hotel exceeded our expectations and we would stay again maybe with an upgraded room and recommend it without any hesitation.

My husband and I are in our late 20s/ early 30s, were overall satisfied with the location and cleaniness of this hotel. However, be sure to bring a clock, as this hotel has no clocks int he rooms and one time they forgot to give as a wake up call! thank goodness it was not the day we were leaving, or we would have missed the flight. Otherwise, it's a decent hotel.

Very basic hotel. We stayed one night only.
Breakfast was served in a floor underground, felt like a bunker and wasn´t satisfactory.

Excluding the breakfast there was nothing very badly wrong with the hotel but I wouldn´t stay here again. If you get a super-deal on price and want to be really close to the La Ramblas and won´t spend any time at the hotel, then you could consider. But can´t really recommend it otherwise.

We really liked this hotel - it's not flashy, it's nice but fairly basic, but it has everything you need and is in a perfect location. For us location was everything, we don't spend that much time in the hotel anyway and we wanted to be close to the action. This hotel is a 2 minute walk to La Ramblas and Placa Catalunya, and 5-10mins walk if you want to go down to the Gothic Quarter or further. We walked everywhere and loved it.

The hotel staff were very friendly and helpful. We stayed 3 nights at the start of our trip, and had a fantastic room (one of the larger corner rooms, on the curved section of the building) which was lovely. The bathroom was large and immaculate. We had nice views, and the rooms have a safe which is important in Barcelona.

We actually decided to return to this hotel at the end of our trip, as we had a couple more days in Barca. We booked at the last minute and had a smaller room, but it was fine for our purposes.

Would recommend if you want a great central location, pretty good value, and are happy with a room that's clean and comfortable, but not really flash.

My decision to choose this hotel whilst staying in barcelona was through reviews i had read, so i just want to do my bit now to help others.

The hotel is perfectly located on a main street, about 3-5 mins walk to the centre of barcelona / la Rambla. so pretty much everything you need is within walking distance and walking home from a night out in town in my opinion as a young female traveller felt really safe.
The hotel itself is clean, modern and has all the basics you need. The maid did a brilliant job cleaning our rooms, making the beds and replacing the towels daily. I stayed in a triple bedroom which was really big, whilst my other friends stayed in a double and twin rooms both slighty smaller but its wasn't an issue.
The A/C works, also a safe in the room to keep your passport, money etc safe.
The staff are really nice and approachable, speak english well and are happy to direct/recommend you places etc .
Would stay here again.

Hotel is less than a 5 minute walk from bus stop where aeroport bus picks up & drops off at Placa Catalunya. Various metro stations within easy walking distance, not that we used the metro as the location of the hotel is perfect. Hotel staff friendly & helpfull as we were able to check in early. Continental breakfast provided, which had plenty of choice. Room was much bigger than I expected & bathroom had 2 showers & a large bath. Both bedroom & bathroom was air conditioned.

Just returned from a 5 night stay at this hotel, which was clean, room basic (double bed, desk unit, leather chair, tall unit for TV, coffee machine and fridge) but comfortable although on the small side. Bathroom, good size, very clean and stocked with toiletries, daily towel change, efficient room aircon (33 deg outside during the day). Breakfast was adequate for a 2 star, variety of breads, rolls, cheese, cold meats, yougart, pastries, etc. The breakfast room in Basement was a bit claustrophobic. Fantastic hotel location, metro right outside and 5 min walk down to the bustling La Ramblas. Thought the many Tapas bars along La Ramblas to be 'rip offs' and better to seek out eateries in the side streets and narrow alleys. Most tourist sites easy walking distance, public toilets exist but you need to hunt them out!!! Port Vell leisure island is good for harbour side restaurants, 'The Wok' was excellent, the beach front also has frequent toilets and good bars/restaurants, 'Sol Cafe' was also excellent value. The Aerobus from airport was ideal, terminates at Place Da Catalunya, less than 5 mins to hotel, fare now Euro 4.05. and run every 6 mins. The only 'downside' of a city centre hotel is the traffic noise which disturbed the sleep but other than that .............would recommend the hotel and Barcelona which has a great atmosphere.
