“Beautiful grounds”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 June 2014

We stayed at this residence for one night in early June , as we left we said it was a pity we were not there for longer. The rooms are basic twin rooms , we had superior ones and the beds were comfortable , cleanliness including shower room was excellent. The beauty of this place is the grounds it is set in , it has gardens with statues and fountains and ponds , as one walked around it felt like being in a retreat. There are not many facilities here , there was a coffee and snack machine in the modern block we slept in and we breakfasted in the dining room in the older building , good continental breakfast in a nice large dining room (they also appear to do evening meals) . It is easly to get to on metro line 3(green) to Montbau station - we came by train from the airport changing at Passeig de Gracia (easy) and did the journey for 1.03 euros using a T10 ticket(well worth buying at Euros 10.30 for 10 journeys of 1 hour 15 mins on all public transport forms in the city , more than one person can use the same ticket - just go through the barrier and pass it back - this is legal !!) The Residencia is a 7 or 8 minute walk downhill to the "matches" sculpture and turn right - obviously harder uphill going back ! The surrounding area felt safe and was quite peaceful , there are not a great many places to eat here , we had a drink outside on the pavement at a tapas bar and We ate at a bar/restaurant called El Parque and this was Spanish food (tapas are good portions) at reasonable prices and the owner was very helpful , the other restaurant near the station was Chinese , we did not try this . All three are between the metro station and the residence, El Parque is off to the left around a corner between the Chinese and the fish restaurant. If you are looking for reasonably priced accommodation in Barcelona in a nice setting , do try this , (it is also good for the Park Guell which is on about 4 stops back towards the city - station Vallcarca is best as it has escalators to go up the hills to the park)

Room Tip: we had superior rooms - some people complained about bed quality on reviews so it is probably worth...

Yes, the hotel is not fancy, the rooms are hostel like in size and the hotel elevator is small and dated, but the property is kept up and clean. Each of my rooms had it's own bath, shower and closet. The Wifi reception was weak on the fourth floor so we went down the "La Sala" (3rd floor) where a TV and several couches were located (no TV in rooms --- but you should be exploring during the day as resting at night). The small gardens around the grounds were very nice (although quickly toured). The ocean breeze was refreshing, and the view at night enchanting. Several parrot family birds even flew in amongst the trees by the room at night.

The hotel is located closed to the green metro line and extremely convenient for travel to the usual tourist spots.

Our dinner was a very good assortment of roasted vegetables, salad, bread, chicken, potato, wine, coffee, etc... Be sure to tell the staff early however if you plan to attend as during lighter attendance days (such as it was when I was there) the cook staff prepares a number of "plates" in advance and does not present the entire buffet as usual. It was perfect for use after a day of traveling.

CONS: Little information regarding how to get here.

Without being directly in the heart of the hustle and bustle of the city and away from the norm, the information desk at El Prat airport was horribly misinformed. Do not let them misdirect you! I was told it would cost upwards of 70 Euro for a cab --- that was not true. Upon my return the trip was 20 Euro for 3 people and about twenty minutes away from El Prat.

The El Prat voyage (large suitcases in tow) took almost two hours and cost almost 50 Euro for three people using the information desk prescribed route. We bumped our luggage up and down many steps and even had a close call with 3 woman intent on pickpocketing (ha ha ... no such luck that day ladies). The bus and metro approach may be suitable for light travelers and backpackers but I'd suggest a taxi for arrival with luggage. If you have a phone call the hotel directly and have them arrange the taxi for you on arrival (I had no phone).

I'm not a local but if you'd still prefer to travel by bus and metro, my suggested route would be:

The A10 (blue bus) to the city center ("El Centro")
then take the Green metro line to Montbau.
When you get off at Montbau
head downhill toward the sculpture of a book of matches and turn right.
About halfway down the street you'll find a gate where you must buzz in.

The walk from the metro is 10 minutes at most.

(The El Prat info desk provided directions: Bus A10 > Metro Blue line to Horta > Bus 185 to Hotel --- 2HRs!)

I hope the hotel does more to provide better suggestions on how to arrive in the future. It would be interesting also to better understand the history of the place (but that's what Google's for). Overall I found this out of the way, affordable, peaceful and enjoyable, I'll definitely add it as stop for future travel.

Room Tip: I paid extra for the deluxe but it may not really matter.

I must admit we were a bit apprehensive as he approached the hotel, having read several comments about it. It wasn't easy to find, but what a find it was. Unusually for Barcelona, there was lots of enclosed free car parking and the most amazing gardens one could imagine.

We stayed in the new block in a basic twin room - basic meaning simple, ie, no television. It was fine as we were out of the building all day. It was warm, but windows could be opened. Breakfast was again simple, but it was included in the price, comprising of coffee, croissant and rolls. Not the best, but certainly filled one's stomach for a busy day.

The gardens were great - very relaxing, but also a penned football pitch and goals for children or adults to play on.

One should remember that this residence appears to be primarily aided at religious organisations and clergy - nevertheless, it was relaxing and well located - only a 5 - 10 min walk to the metro station. There were also great views over the city as it was situated quite high to the north.

Stayed at the Residencia Salesiana Marti-Codolar for five nights on a recent trip to Barcelona. Very very cheap rates, so perfect for those travellers on a budget! We stayed in a twin room with two small single beds. As mentioned, the rooms are dorm style as the property is some kind of university campus. Had a great view over the hills though, and if you craned your neck out the window, there was an ocean view also! We didn't spend that much time in the room, so the fact it doesn't have a television, etc did not bother us. Internet access is provided, sheets and other linens are clean as was the rest of the room (serviced everyday!). There is no air-conditioning however and being the end of summer, it was very hot some nights.

Staff were very hospitable, friendly and helpful in answering our questions / meeting our needs and are there 24 hours. Train station is a 10 minute walk, and roughly takes 15-20 minutes to get in the main 'hub' of Barcelona. For those who want to stay out late at night, the location of this property as the trains do stop running (as we found out on our last night). Despite this, a cab roughly costs around 15 euro from downtown Barcelona to the Residencia.

Regarding breakfast, we gave it a try on our first morning. It was probably the most unenjoyable buffet we had ever attended, and for the rest of our stay would travel into the main area to eat. It should be mentioned the rooms do not have refrigerators, kettles, utensils etc which is a little inconvenient, so we kept fruits and other dry goods in our room. There did not appear to be much (or anything) in terms of eating or general grocery stores in the area, but there is a vending machine on the third floor which was handy at times.

If I was to visit Barcelona again, I would probably opt to stay closer to the main area but despite this, cannot complain about our time at the Residencia. It was great value for money!

The hotel is really cheap, and it is well connected.
The metro is 10 minutes by walk, and it is the main line, connecting to the center and almost all the major attractions.

The hotel is like dorms room, small beds and bathrooms, but it's efficient.
The only really bad thing is that there is NO AIR CONDITIONING!
In summer it was tough.. so think of it if you are a person who suffers terribly the heat ;)

Top 3 criteria for me while booking:
1) Of course budget! Ours for this trip was 50 to 80 euros per night for a double room
2) Proximity of accommodation to a Metro station (has to be within 5-10mins walkable distance!) which is well-connected to the rest of the attractions in the city
3) And how safe is its location for 2 girls new to the city
Residencia Salesiana fit the bill.
Rooms: At barely 55euros per night for 2 persons which included breakfast, it was a good bargain since all we needed was a place to sleep and clean-up. Room and toilet were clean with a desk, chair, cupboards, and clean towels in the bathroom. We were aware that housekeeping was performed once every 3 days, a slight discomfort. Our room looked down at basketball court where kids would come down every evening, and a beautiful view of mountains which we woke-up and slept to each day.
Location: 10mins walk from Metro station (backpacker’s disclaimer: the road steeps down and climbs up), the university is easy to locate. This station can be taken to many attractions in half an hour more or less. The university ground feels very safe, and is situated at a beautiful location. Finding a restaurant nearby wasn’t very easy though. We walked quite a bit in every direction possible but couldn’t find a place for a meal or even a snack. May be we weren't looking right. There’s a place near station where you can have drinks.
Service: Staff was on rotation so it’s really your luck who’s at the desk that day. On our first day, there was a really helpful guy who seeing us just sitting around in the garden, informed (or rather insisted enthusiastically) that we go for the light-show event at La Sagrada, special for La Merceˊ. God bless him!
Breakfast hall is big, of course built like a university cafeteria. Breakfast spread was fair.
