We found this restaurant while we were walking around the Gothic Quarter and it was a great first experience with tapas! Somehow we got lucky and were able to sit on the terrace - it was lovely just to sit and watch the world go by. We ordered about 6 different tapas dishes and loved every one of them. Wish we had another opportunity to eat here again before leaving Barcelona!

After reading several reviews on restaurants in the area we decided on El Atril. We checked the hours on their website which were listed as 12:00 to midnight. Arriving at 18:00, seeing that the hours were listed the same as the website on the window, we expected to run into no problems having Tapas. We were informed that there was NO food served at all until they open at 19:30. That was no problem, we made a reservation for two and went to a local bar for a glass of wine. We returned around 19:30 to a restaurant full of customers with food! Still we were flexible, thinking maybe the kitchen got an early start and excited thinking this must be the place to go by the amount of diners. We were sat and our order was taken promptly. We had 4 tapas dished, followed by 2 dinner plates. The tapas was good enough but nothing special but the dinner plates were sadly lacking. Both dishes were served cold (expected hot) and my husbands dish was served with a mayonnaise sauce instead of the yogurt sauce listed on the menu. The mayo sauce was far too heavy for the dish. Overall I didn't give the restaurant an "average" rating because the menu was interesting and the food might have been good if it had been served hot and with the right sauces. The wine was great and the location was interesting but not a "must go".

Hi there,
The kitchen is open from 12 to midnight Tuesday to Saturday, Sunday 11:45am to 11:45pm and Monday from 6pm for tapas and 7pm for night menu,. The hours have been the same for the past 3years.
During the week we serve the lunch menú from 1pm to 4-4:30pm and then the "carta" main menu is available from 7pm.
All of the tapas and "torradas"(grilled toasts) are served all day, even when the lunch and evening menus are running.
If it was an unexpectedly, particularly busy day there is a chance that we closed the kitchen for fried and/or hot dishes to change the oil (which we do frequently) and get a head start on the night time preparation,.. this normally only takes about 20-30minutes….the staff have given you a larger margin so as to not leave you waiting…... as you said when you returned to the restaurant it was full, hence i believe the kitchen staff pre-empted the necessity for adequate preparation.
I imagine the dish which was served cold was the Cajun Eggplant,. to blacken the spices on the eggplant it requires approx. 40min on the grill which we do previously,. and then 10min in the gas oven on service, (WE HAVE NO MICROWAVE OVEN IN OUR KITCHEN) as the restaurant was full and depending on the timing of your other dishes perhaps it was rushed slightly,.
....our apologies.
All our sauces, reductions and mayonnaises are house made,. again please accept our apologies for the oversight, if the yogurt sauce was not yet made (needs to be made daily) they may have substituted it for the coriander and lime mayonnaise.
I'm glad you enjoyed the wine and the ambience and hope the experience wasn't too tarnished to return someday.
best regards
Brenden

A discrete place, the food was top-notch during our visit. There was a sense of family about the place - despite being very professionally run - almost as though this was the local hangout. A touch out-the-way but worth seeking out. Inventive combinations of good ingredients without overloading flavours. Not formal dining but a place for good food with good company.
