“Nice but could be much better”
Reviewed 18 October 2010

Staff did not show up for work, broken check-in machine, no invoice, no microwave, no freezer, white everywhere and the furniture was quite dirty, no parking except in the tight and expensive underground. Fortunately we did not plan to stay in the apartment very much and the locations worked well for sightseeing. These apartments are maybe 80% of the way to a great location to stay. All they need is improved staff, maybe a design change to better apartment type colored furniture, microwave, small freezer for ice cream and ice, bowls to eat out of and some small boxes of laundry and dishwasher detergent. Right now, they are more for long stay where the person brings some more with them. It does not quite meet the needs of an "efficiency apartment" but they are close. I wish I could get in touch with the owners to let them know how to make it better.
Wouls I stay here again? Yes.... but now I know what they lack and can be prepared for it. Just a little more would have made the stay so much better.

Thanks for your review. We are going to carefully consider your recommendations.
The staff works hard every day, furthermore there is an emergency number where you can dial in case there is any problem that show up during your stay and out of office hours, so all the staff is attentive and helpful at any time, any hour.
As you may noticed Eric Vökel offers high quality apartment service where our guests can find: crockery, cutlery, linen, towels and all what it is necessary as household. Consequently the guest is only required to bring all what refers to perishable goods.

Regarding the parking, Barcelona is a very expensive city and we do offer a very good rate for all those guests who ask for a parking lot during their stay.

We hope to welcome you back sometime at Eric Vökel, kind regards from Barcelona.

Our 2 bedroom, 1 bath apartment was beautiful. Faced a back street, so noise was not an issue. Very modern and stylish, and worked well for 2 mature couples - there was a lift. Also appreciated access to a public computer, as we had not brought ours. The staff was extremely helpful with car rentals, reservations, etc., as they spoke excellent English and, of course, fluent Spanish. We highly recommend these apartments.

Home away from home: We arrived at Eric Vokel after check-in hours because a bag with our passports had been stolen at the station...the emergency helpline in the lobby connected us with a very very helpful receptionist who not only guided us on where we could file a police complaint, but also assisted with extended our apartment bookings so we could retain the rooms for an extra 3 days, so we had time to get to Madrid where our country's embassy is located and come back to a well settled apartment. Felt like we were 'home' when we arrived at Eric Vokel.

Location: The apartment is located bang opposite the entrance to the metro stop Sant Pau(literally just across the street), so we were able to catch the first metro out to the Sants station to make a 5.50am connection by AVE to Madrid. Wouldn't have been easy if we stayed anywhere else! (it also helped that there are dozens of eateries and grocers all around, so we could easily grab a quick bite before heading out to the sights. sagrada familia is 10 minutes away if you stroll slowly, snapping pictures and popping into stores.)

Rooms: Kitchen was well stocked, bedrooms comfortable, linens fresh and crisp. A nice street view from the teeny balcony. And maybe we had a different side of the building but no one heard any noise...not even my 1.5 year old who stirs easily.

What we'd change: Only minor challenge for my parents who were using the second bedroom was that the bathroom(which had no way of being locked), has no knob or handle to allow you to grip and slide it from the inside, so each bathtime brought a new adventure! Would be great if someone could have tiny knobs added on the inside of the glass doors in apartment 14.

Overall: My husband and I are all praise for not just the obvious design and comfort of these smart apartments but the exceptional staff who silently go about their work, unseen but available when you really need them.

We can't wait to plan our next stay with Eric Vokel, if we do come back to Barcelona this is where we will stay.

I spent ages looking at lots of reviews of hotels in Barcelona and settled on the Erik Vokel Boutique Apartments Gaudi Suites because everyone seemed to rave about this place. I think I can only duplicate what others have said, these are fantastic rooms at a good price, with the bonus of a kitchen, a spacious lounge and you do feel less of a tourist from being in a hotel room. The location is only slightly out from the centre but very easy to travel too and from. The apartment was very modern and clean and all the facilties were good. We paid roughly £100 per night and got a 2 bed apartment but for 2 persons only. I booked through last minute.com and requested a room away from the street. This did not happen and we found ourselves at the front on the street on a busy intersection with cars and scooters going past all night and very early traffic noise in the morning from about 5am. Fortunately because it was a 2 bed apartment I was able to go in the spare twin room which was an internal room with sliding door, there was a window but no view, bit like a lift shaft, it was very quiet in that room, but I would have been extremely unhappy had I not been able to do this. I did ask to be moved on our arrival to be told all apartments were taken and that our choice of apartment all faced the street, I was told that perhaps the next night we could move but all that was offered was the same apartment 2 floors up. I didn't think this would make a difference so stayed put. I did not sleep well on this holiday so be warned. In the surrounding areas were a good seletion of cafes, bars. We ate in a 1 Michelin Star restauant called Alkimia on the same street but further across, it was good but cost 250 euro which is what you would expect, the staff were a little too attentive, my partner's plate was cleared before I had finished mine and the wine waitress kept correcting my choice of wine and recommending others at twice the price. The food was good but the translation not alway accurate, pork cheek came out as cheek pork but sounded like "Chipmunk" so I got the giggles. We had a great few days but feel Erik Vokel needs to make it clear on their website that most rooms are facing the street and perhaps should take measures to triple glaze the balcony door. Next time we would look for a quiter location if that exists in Barcelona.

Thanks for your review. Concerning your query, we would like to inform that the type of apartment you booked is always facing the street, even though we weren't able to change your apartment because we had all the apartments already booked for other guests.
The noise is always something very personal but we do understand your point of view, and would like to welcome you some other time.
We are glad to know that although this little inconvenient you spent lovely holidays in our city.

Kind regards, Eric Vökel's Team

Just spent 4 days in Barcelona with 2 small children, can only recommend Gaudi Suites in such cases. Baby cot was available at no cost, room was spacious enough to allocate this additional bed. All equipment worked well. Only thing missing was a high-chair for our baby...

We stayed four nights at the Gaudi Suites and were fortunate enough to get apartment #61, which has a private rooftop terrace. It was great to sit outside for meals and relax with a book. We did not experience any traffic noise unless sitting outside. The apartment was modern, very clean and well appointed. The building is right across the street from a Metro stop, which made it very convenient to get around to other parts of the city even late at night. We felt very safe in the neighborhood and on the Metro. You can walk to Sagrada Familia and Hospital de Sant Pau. There are small shops to purchase food and beverages within a one to three block radius. The neighborhood is also filled with casual cafes. We only discovered one somewhat higher end restaurant in the neighborhood, which was good. Overall, the apartment was an excellent value and I would highly recommend staying at the Gaudi Suites. We would definitely come back on a return trip to Barcelona.

I would like to endorse the Gaudi Suites - it is without question one of the best appointed forms of accommodation I have book anywhere in the world and is excellent value for money - spotlessly clean, relatively spacious and beautifully appointed. However, if you reserve a Calle Industria facing apartment you must bring ear plugs. The noise from the street, despite double glazing is terrible - vehicular traffic, garbage trucks twice a night, ambulances, people noise etc - and is not conducive to sleeping well or being on par the next day. I would definitely return here, but would definitely not stay below the top floor in an apartment on the street side.

Thanks for your review.
We would like to inform our guests that we are improving all the noise isolations, but anyways Barcelona is a very busy city with plenty of movement at any time of the day or night, and as we are well located for the convenience of our guests, we are in an area full of noise.

We are glad to know all the impressions of our guests in order to improve and make our apartments better day by day.
