Europe is getting way too expensive for my tastes but it can still be done on a budget but nowhere near as cheaply as in days gone by...the Euro is hurting everyone. Pension Alamar combines the cheapest rooms in the best location for those seeking something centrally located. It is in the Gothic area, near to La Rambla, metro, the harbor, etc. And lots of cheap eateries can be found nearby as long as you avoid the obvious tourist joints which encompasses many of the restaurants in the area.
We purchased most of our beer and wine in grocery stores and only splurged once on a high priced paella meal which was good but not worth the $80 (including a good bottle of Vin Verdeho) for the two of us.
The manager Roger is a great young guy. He understands the people seeking the type of accommodation he supplies (cheap and basic) and consciously explains the various alternatives regarding prices for various activities from cheap to expensive.
the rest of the staff is a sweet little older lady and her grumpy husband; neither of whom speak english but they are patient and for us communication wasn't an issue. Lots of pointing and gestures and waiting for Roger to show up for detailed information and directions.
The rooms are small and basic (12 cells with 2 toilets and 2 showers). The exterior rooms are very noisy (Barcelona never sleeps and this is in the heart of it) and ear plugs didn't eliminate the noise. The few interior rooms are deliciously quiet and cool, except for noise made by other guests/staff.

Room Tip: For sleep chose interior rooms.

I've given it 5 stars, I could nitpick and grumble about this and that but............. I only paid 25 Euros per night 3 minutes walk from Las Ramblas!

The communications were excellent, Roger replied quickly and accurately to my emails. I took the metro to Dressanes, walked 2 minutes north, turned right down Carrer Escudellers and 3 minutes later you are at the door.

I liked:-
Location.
The new lift.
Very friendly lady (Rogers mother?) who showed me around.
Kitchen.
Spotlessly clean. (At 25Eu that is all I was really interested in)
Secure. Somebody would need 3 different keys to access your room. They'd also have to pass through reception which appeared to be permanently manned.
Bar, shop & newsagents right outside the front door.

I didn't like too much:-
No air con. I could not stay here in summer.
The toilets and bathroom have raised floors, at 6' I couldn't shower without banging my head on the ceiling.

This place is a steal for the cost, at this price range cleanliness is the main requirement and it was spotless. everything else, lift, safe, friendly owners, large kitchen and location is a bonus.

Small hostel in the middle of the Old Town.
It was very very very clean (cleaning lady was very serious about it)
Wear your earplugs to sleep at night, the street is very busy.
The owners didn't speak English, but who cares! Had the time of my life!
Beds are a little small though, so I advise to get 2 single beds instead of 1 double bed.

++++ Would do this again :)

It was an individual room with a shared bathroom, and the rate was 25€/night, and it didn’t include breakfast, because they didn’t provide this service (but there is a kitchen which you are free to use).

The reservation is made by email, and you have to pay the full amount of your stay when you do the check in.

After the check in you will be given a set of keys: one to your bedroom, other to the door of the pension in the 2nd floor and a third one that opens the door of the building and in this way you can enter /leave the pension 24h/day.

They don’t speak English, although for me this wasn’t a problem, for those who don’t speak or understand Spanish, this could be a problem.

Don’t be put off by the degraded aspect of the building, the pension on it self looks much better than the building!

Great location in Bairro Gótico (simple to get when you see the symbol of a pharmacy you are there), near the Ramblas, the beach,Picasso museum, etc. It’s the perfect location to explore Barcelona, because you are in the middle of the city.

The room was comfortable, clean and quiet; I wasn’t disturbed by noise of traffic on the street or by other guests in the hotel. There is a lift. The bed was fine for me, but once and again for those who are taller this may be a problem (I’m 1, 70m). There isn’t a TV or safe in the room.
They have aircon on the hall, but in the room they only have a small vent, and for those who aren’t used to high temperatures this could be a problem (notice that at night the temperature in BCN is 34ºC), but for me it wasn’t a problem!

The shared bathroom is very well kept and clean, and I never had to wait to use it. Notice that the shower is 1,80 m, and the toilet are very slim.

Near the pension , there are a lot of stores that sell fruit and supermarkets.

So in a nutshell, if you are travelling alone, and just need to rest and take a bath and with a good location, this is a good option!

Tip
If you arrive to BCN by plain, get your camera ready and take a shot in the fantastic views of Barcelona from the air.

....i manage a B&B/pension in St Augustine, Florida and this is a great place to stay. Centrally located in the Gotic district i couldnt have stayed closer to History.

i always wonder what motivates a person to leave a bad review besides a bad experience. Did they "really" investigate where they will stay? Do they know what the difference between a Pension or 5 star hotel is? My conclusion, most bad reviews are written because "the customer" did not do proper research before they stayed. So, discruntled from their own stupidity, they now find the smallest of details to complain about TO compensate for their OWN SCREW-UP.

My experience at Pensio Alamar was 5 star. The "live-in" staff was super helpful. We had a great view as all the rooms facing the streets do. The elevator does work. I would not have stayed any where else....this place for me was a diamond in a hay stack.

(Bring ear plugs no matter what place you stay, whether 5 star of Hostel, the noicy gothic stone streets and buildings reverberate every sound)

Plus, DO NOT TRAVEL TO SPAIN IN AUGUST.....IT IS THE HIGHEST OF THEIR HIGH SEASONS....4 HOUR WAIT JUST TO GET INTO THE SAGRADA FAMILIA, THAN YOU ARE BUMPING INTO TOURIST EVERY INCH.

Room Tip: bring ear plugs, no matter where you stay in the bari gotic, noice is echoes at night everywhere.

This is a good, inexpensive hostel in a very good location. Its in the gothic district, and is close top the ramblas, and walking distance to the post and beach. There's good shops and bars in the vicinity, less expensive and with more character than the ramblas bars. Its very clean. The bed is small, but comfortable. There is a sink in the room and we had our own balcony, which was very scenic. The noise may bother some, but I sleep with earplugs so couldn't hear the outdoor noise. The lady and man that work there were pleasant. They didn't speak any English, though we all communicated well enough There is a kitchen, though it can only be used at certain times. The toilet and bathroom are shared, but very clean. The living room mainly has the man watching tv and smoking, or the lady ironing in, so isn't really a place to hang out. I'd definatly return as it was inexpensive, and good to use as a base for exploring the city. Barcelona's ace, who needs much time in the hotel :)

For 40 euro per night you cannot beat this pension. Great location, 8 minutes to the Cathedral, 10 minutes to Generalitat, 15 minutes to Picasso Museum, 10 minutes to the Ramblas. It's immaculately clean and well kept up by the couple who manage it for the owner. We stayed 6 nights. Shared shower and toilet but was not a problem as there are 2 of each therefore we were never waiting. The balcony rooms are best. Much perferred the warmness of Pension Alamar than one which we paid more than double off the Ramblas which was scary after 11 PM. This pension is in a better, safer location in Barri Gotic, locals know to stay here not near the Ramblas. The couple who manage the place day to day even called for a taxi to take us to the airport which saved us 8 euro as opposed to hailing a street cab. Even has a kitchen for guests to use that helped us get early starts with substantial and cheap home made breakfasts. Senora will kindly show you how to use the traditional stove top European coffee maker. No Wifi but that is a small sacrifice for what you are getting. If you can go with the flow and don't need all the mod cons this is a great deal. We showed up without the cash to pay for the 6 nights and we were permitted to stay and pay the next day. Now that is hospitality. Gracies Roger!!!

Room Tip: Corner with balcony and 2 beds was best.
