Owner description: The Basilica of the Sagrada Familia is a monumental church devoted to the Holy Family: Jesus, Mary and Joseph. Construction began in 1882, based on plans drawn up by the architect Francisco de Paula del Villar, and Antoni Gaudi was commissioned to continue the project in 1883. The Temple has always been an expiatory church, built only from donations. As Gaudi said: "The Expiatory Church of the Sagrada Familia is made by the people and is mirrored in them. It is a work that is in the hands of God and the will of the people." In 2010, Pope Benedict XVI consecrated the site as a minor basilica.

Simply amazing but be sure to order skip the line tickets or be prepared for a long wait to get in. The architecture is breathtaking.

We bought our tickets for the Sagrada Familia online prior to arrival in Barcelona. This meant that we avoided the long ticket queue at the front of the cathedral and could then enter from the other side (the Nativity fasçade). There was no queue whatsoever! Audio guide is very useful and is collected after entry from an area just outside and to the right of the entry to the cathedral itself. Since the cathedral is under construction there was considerable construction noise inside and there were a great many people. Not exactly conducive to quiet contemplation! That said, it is an extraordinary and quite beautiful building. Allow at least an hour and a half to look around both inside and out and book to visit one of the towers. Both have splendid views of the city. There is an elevator to take you up; the walk down can be a little disorientating and in places the passageway is very narrow. Meeting confused visitors mistakenly returning when they should be descending can be a challenging experience! Certainly not to be missed and easily accessibly by Metro.
