Owner description: The Basilica of the Sagrada Familia is a monumental church devoted to the Holy Family: Jesus, Mary and Joseph. Construction began in 1882, based on plans drawn up by the architect Francisco de Paula del Villar, and Antoni Gaudi was commissioned to continue the project in 1883. The Temple has always been an expiatory church, built only from donations. As Gaudi said: "The Expiatory Church of the Sagrada Familia is made by the people and is mirrored in them. It is a work that is in the hands of God and the will of the people." In 2010, Pope Benedict XVI consecrated the site as a minor basilica

Be sure to book your tickets online in advance. Sagrada Familia is worth the visit. It was unreal how much detail and effort went into this masterpiece. If you're in Barcelona, this is absolutely a must. We got food to go and ate lunch in the park across the street and pond to have an amazing view of it. It's amazing.

We landed at Barcelona airport, dumped our luggage on the dock, and taxied only $11.00) to La Sagrada. ALWAYS buy tickets online at least a month ahead. The unlucky were in a line stretching to infinity. There are hardly words to describe this creation. We used the audio guide, and still weren't quite sure if we were looking at what it was describing, but it didn't matter. The sunlight hitting the stained glass made it look magical. We did go up in one of the towers. The view gave me vertigo, so I plastered myself to the walls and handrails, but the many portals on the climb down allowed one to see the intricate designs up close and we have over 200 photos that are all amazing. We were there almost 3 hours. This should be on everyone's bucket list.

This whimsical structure on the exterior with all it's detail and busy flourishes is awe inspiring. Then when you walk in and the lightness and restfullness you feel is immediate. Truly amazing. A very gifted architect was Gaudi. A must see to experience and learn just a little of the extraordinary gift bestowed upon Barcelona.

Worth the time! Definitely book your tickets online ahead of time. Lines tend to get very long.
The area below the church is impressive as well so reserve that time. You can read about the history of the church, see the workshop, Gaudi's grave. The experience in the church is amazing. If you stay for a while, you'll notice how the light changes as it comes through the different vitreauxs.

The glass work is amazing, keeping the feeling light and airy, not like a dungeon. Under construction for over a century. Book ahead for a tour in your languange, and don't pass up the museum part.
