We stayed at Hotel Colon August 8-11, 2014 before boarding a cruise. We absolutely loved the hotel as it provided all the comforts we needed along with a perfect location. This is def a classic/vintage hotel so if you're looking for all new, American style hotels, look elsewhere.
We got a nice corner room that did not face the Cathedral. The streets were quiet and the only noise I heard were delivery trucks at times. It didn't bother me one bit. We had two small balconies that were lovely. The room was big and clean. We had three people so two beds and a pull-out sofa bed. The beds were not the greatest but we were tired and had no problem sleeping. My mom used the sofa bed and she had a hard time with that however when she mentioned it to the front desk they immediately sent up a new bed and that was much better. The bathroom was spacious with a large tub. All very clean.
Location can't be beat. Located across from the Barcelona cathedral it is a lovely plaza and convenient to the Gothic Quarter, Ramblas and Plaza Catalunya. There is also a "TrixiCab" stop right next to the hotel and we did a 30-minute tour with them. Super fun and cheap. There is also a stop in the corner for the double-deck tour bus. It's the red-line and you can buy your tickets at the front desk (saves you $2)
There is a Starbucks close by but do yourself a favor and try some of the Bars across the hotel (next to Cathedral). I wish I had the name of the place but it was recommended to us by one of the doormen and it was fantastic. We enjoyed our breakfast there every morning - try their patatas and their "pan con tomate".
The front desk staff is really nice and helpful. They may seem a little grumpy but they are truly sweet and really nice. The doormen are awesome and so helpful too. I loved the staff overall. The only place I felt a little weird was in the restaurant. We dined there for dinner once. It's really good but a bit pricey. Service was efficient but lacked attention to detail and friendly customer service.
Also, the hotel provides free Wi-Fi which was wonderful and worked perfectly. The cab from the airport to the hotel cost us 17 Euro which I thought was great. I had originally booked a private car through the hotel but the company had a mix-up with the times and therefore we just took a cab (which btw, I don't blame the hotel for this at all ... once they realized I wasn't crazy, they apologized profusely). The cab from the hotel to the port cost us 20 Euro, cab from Hotel to Sagrada Familia cost us 10 Euro.
I will def return to Hotel Colon and will be sure to recommend it to any friends going to Barcelona.
