Owner description: This fascinating area is steeped in history, with city hall located in the same spot where kings once reigned. You'll find narrow streets and squares here, with Gothic mansions, museums, historic churches, bars and restaurants. The Placa del Rei is reputedly the place where King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella welcomed Columbus after his voyage to America.

Don't bother with a guide unless you like some info. Take a map and guide yourself. See the Cathedral, St.James Square, walk the narrow streets, have lunch/dinner at Can Culleretes. Also L'Antic Botic a great spot to eat. A walk at night gives a different perspective. Easy to get lost but east to get found again.

There are lovely little lanes to wander through with tiny shops, restaurants and cafes to visit, there is a lot to see. It has a great atmosphere and is steeped in history and art with interesting buildings to enjoy so make sure you wear comfy shoes and don't go here with an agenda.

Just go with a few hours free to wander around and admire the streets and the architecture.

I love the way you can all of a sudden you walk out into a courtyard, those little hidden areas are a real joy. Nice to lose a few hours here.

Safe in the evening/night and entertaining in the days.
We had an excellent late lunch at a tapas restaurant after strolling a whole day between La Rambla and Barceloneta. In the evening we did some shopping and the pubs were friendly and cosy in this area.

This and the Gothic Quarters are the 2 districts you must visit while touring Barcelona, which also contains other neighborhoods such as El Born (chic and hip part of town) and Barceloneta (waterfront marina). Ciutat Vella has great character, charm, and tons of history. Enjoy the food, the shops, the architecture, and the locals as you stroll aimlessly through these streets.

This was one of the places we went back to with our 'hop on hop off' tickets and it's really worth the effort - boutique shops and eating places - small interlocked streets, and just a great atmosphere
