“Great value”
Reviewed 19 October 2013

I've stayed in Somnio - the sister hotel of this so knew I wouldn't be disappointed.
We had a HUGE room with lovely view. I love the colour scheme and design.
The shared bathrooms are fine - and one was next door to our room so we never had to queue.
The staff were lovely and helpful and chilled cava for me as it was my birthday.
Location cannot be beaten, its hard to believe you can pay this little to stay so centrally.
All in all a great experience from someone who considers them self too old for hostels!!

The hostel is clean and tidy with friendly staff. The bed was really comfortable after walking round the town all day. Would definately stay again. The outside area is peaceful and a good place to have a drink and unwind.

We just spent four nights here and I'm pretty sure we got the best room in the place, it was nice and big, had a nice little sitting area and big open windows to the main st. This made the stay comfortable!

We wear earplugs if needed and you will need them here. The noise from the road is very loud so just be warned. The room seemed ok when we arrived but as we settled in we found hair under the table on the floor, a used tissue under the bedside table so it wasn't the cleanest. The bathrooms were functional but very very dirty. The baths and showers look like the gunk build up was years old. It reminded me of a student flat. They may be cleaned or freshened twice a day but when I went in on a no of occasions there was hair in the sink, wet floors and dirty towels. If I went in super early it was ok but someone should be monitoring this.

The kitchen was useless apart from the fridge. No cooking facilities apart from a microwave and you struggle with two people in there. There was a Nespresso coffee machine in there but no instruction from the staff about the capsules, if you buy them from the office or supply your own???

The staff were a bit strange. I'm not picky and we have thoroughly enjoyed the 5 other hostels we have stayed in but this was the worst. It's not terrible, it could just be a hundred times better. Out of the 6 staff, only one of them smiled..two had no personality and the other two very dry. There was no interaction with the guests or great tips on the city and we had to ask for a map and ask for some things to be marked on it.
All the other hostels had all these amazing events or tips, advice and tours. Example, one place had a cooking class every night, one night a tour of some bars, another day a free walking tour. This had nothing apart from some brochures lying around.

It is not modern, it's not chic and its certainly not funky. It's a bunch of rooms with 4 bathrooms, a common area and a balcony....oh and a room with a fridge and microwave and sink. That's it. The location is excellent.

This could be a 4 star joint, I'm giving it a 2 but if it was clean I'd give it a three.

Based on previous reviews I did expect a more funky and renovated hostel. Our private room was great and we loved the terrace view and location wise it was superb. Things that let the place down are the general uncleanliness (have stayed at hostels in Germany, Portugal, St Petersburg, Denmark & Ireland and this place is definitely the dirtiest we've come across), the kitchen was cramped and constantly untidy, there was a lack of good tourist information such as tips on restaurants & activities and to top it off the staff were not overly friendly (maybe its due to the dull windowless office they sit in - I wouldnt be very happy or inspired working in there myself!). Also, as the staff work shifts and seemed to change every day you had no opportunity to build rapport with them which is often the fun part of hostel stays. Value for money it was okay.

A very aristocratic hostel, with a stunning terrace to chillax upon. Comfortable beds, very clean. The receptionist was very helpful (and charming), gave us some excellent tips on where to eat and swim.

Good location from the point of view of visiting diverse parts of the city. Good transport connections.

Wish I could have spent a few more days soaking up the loveliness that is Barcelona x

The Duo has a great location (short walking distance from Plaza Cataluna and easy to find from the airport). Besides that it is very spacious with a great common lounge and balcony for those post tour/party recoveries. Also, the staff is very helpful and forthcoming. Highly recommended for a stay in Barcelona. Much better than what you think a hostel is.
