The mountain and rocks are spectacular from far away and just get better as you go up the mountain. The views are amazing from the top.We didn't have time to catch the vernicular to the top but it would be worth it. The church is beautiful, and worth the wait in the line to see the black Madonna.

Very nice day trip to Montserrat. Easy train trip from the metro. Stunning views from top of the mountain as well as the Monastery. The museum tour is not bad, I'd skip the audio tour. Also, bring snacks, the food is WAY over priced. Enjoyed the church very much.

Anybody who can spare a day arround Barcelona should go to Montserrat. The misture of monastic life, nature and art is unique. The mountain is extraordinary and can be visited trailing or with funiculars that take you to the top and to the "Holy Cave" where the legend says the image of Mary was found. The maonastery dates from 1025 and it's exuberant and the monks impressive. The museum is one of those hidden gems in the world where you can find extraordinary pieces that make your visit worth the trip. An absolutely unforgettable experience!!

The sky-tram provides the best 360 degree of the valleys and various rock formations. Be sure to sample the locally produced cheeses, honey, bread and baked goods - a culinary treat no to be missed.

In my humble opinion, this is the best of Barcelona. Note I do not care for architecture and I'm an outdoors person. I would suggest leaving early in the morning, I believe the first train from the city leaves at 9am. I can't tell you which station, but I believe it's on the "R" line, sells an all inclusive pass to Montserrat (27 euro). This includes a train to the base of the mountain, cable car to cathedral, and another train / car to the top of the mountain (and return tickets). I noticed a few tourists did not buy the inclusive pass and were forced to pay for each piece separately.

A little information, the mountain is going to be crowded, there's a road to the top so you can drive or take one of the tour buses. The first "level" of the mountain is friendly to all ages, nothing extreme here. The cathedral is a must see, absolutely gorgeous. There are restaurants, shops, and vendors around this area. They're all inexpensive, so don't feel a need to bring food / drink.

The second "level" of the mountain, up the train car, is where the hiking is. I truly regret not having more time up here. I could have spent over an entire day on the trails, enjoying the spectacular views.

My advice, this is a "do not miss" and give yourself the time to enjoy it.
