Went with the Castlexperience tour group to tour Montserrat a magnificent sanctuary carved into the mountain. We then visited a family owned winery Oller and toured the vinyards. They provided an excellent Catalan meal. The organic wines were outstanding! The tour guide Marabel was very informative.

The monastery is beautiful set high upon a mountain. If you go on a Sunday you may get a chance to hear the young boy's choir - quite remarkable. Outside women sit making lace. All the money made from this endeavor is given to the church. Just watching the skill they show in this craft is worth the trip. If you want to extend your day there are hiking trails above the monastery. Some lead to small huts used by hermits. A pleasant day.

Take the train from Barcelona. It's one hour ride then the choice of a cable car or funicular. I prefer the funicular. I still don't know how they got all the materials up this mountain to build, but they did and it's spectacular.

We took the train out. It was easy and took about one hour. We bought a pass that included everything. I could have skipped the audio visual presentation and the cafeteria style lunch.
We waited in a line thinking it was to get into the basilica, but it was for the Madonna. We were trapped down a fairly small corridor for 1.5 hours at least. So be careful what line you get into. I did not see any washrooms along the way and was happy to see her and go. The basilica is beautiful.
We took the funicular up to the top. It had great views and lots of hiking trails. Overall it was a good day and it was nice to see the country side.
