“Great Hotel”
Reviewed 20 June 2012

We recently spent a long weekend here staying in a balcony room overlooking the pool and garden. The hotel location is ideal for both shopping, sights and access to other areas (bus / tube etc) and is just 2 minutes walk from the excellent airport buses (every few minutes) in the square. Staff were always helpful and friendly and the room cool and very quiet with TV, Free WiFi, mini-bar, kettle and wall safe, dressing gowns etc and large balcony and a/c. Garden / pool area nice to relax in away from the hustle and bustle outside. The hotel is on a busy pedestrian only shopping street and I suspect the rooms overlooking this may be rather noisy during at least shopping hours and into the evening.

Room Tip: Balcony room overlooking garden and pool - premium is well worth it I suspect.

This is a lovely hotel very near the Catalunya Plaza, where tourist busses congregate, the busy street La Rambla and right in the gothic area where there are lovely shops, bars and restaurants.
There are no discos or noisy establishments nearby, so eventually it all dies down and one can have a good night's rest.
The hotel has beautiful steps inside!

My husband and I stayed three nights in this hotel in early April. It was a lovely hotel well situated to explore Barcelona. Our room was attractive and modern, a bit on the small side but none-the-less comfortable, which looked into an atrium area. The breakfast was oh-my-goodness wonderful. It was served in a very pleasant room and offered an unusually nice assortment of food and drink, including wines for those who might enjoy that. It is a bit pricey, but we spent one night in a hostal nearby, which did not include breakfast and was not nearly as nice. The difference: around 20E, well worth it in our book. We enjoyed our three nights there and left with a wonderful impression of Barcelona!

Room Tip: I doubt whether there is a bad room in this hotel. Some might be larger and if that is important to...

Think cava, hot summer nights at the balcony, a dip in the pool and perfect location. That is Barcelona and Catalonia Portal de l'Angel for you.

Barcelona is one of my favorite citys in Europe. Here you can combine beach and lovely city life. Location is everything is this city. If you are in for the authentic Barcelona experience stay of the main strip and stay in the old city (El Raval/ El Gotic). Here you have narrow streets, great shopping, a lot of sights and plenty of tapas and cava places. And really important if you go in the summer season, closeness to the beach. Barcelona is hot and a hotel with pool and short distance to the beach is therefore perfect.

This hotel is affordable and in not in any way a luxury hotel. The rooms are okay with hard beds, but good value for the money. If you choose a room with a balcony you get a lovely view over the backyard and pool area. This is highly recommended.

I stayed at this hotel when I first met my boyfriend some years back. Our experience of this hotel is therefore highly impacted by puppy love and my review is not at all objective. This summer we are going back to Barcelona and will stay at the same hotel. So let's see if the experience lives up to my high expectations!

Room Tip: Choose the room with balcony

The Hotel is just off Placa De Catalunya, amazing location, great for shopping and getting the tour buses around barcelona. Central to good bars and restaurants. The hotel itself is clean and well equipped, the bar prices are around the price of other bars in the vicinity, the reception staff are friendly and helpful. We asked for a good restaurant near the port and they were able to provide us with some details. Only complaint about the room was the shower was a little high and wasn't adjustable, but thats just being picky! The pool is in the courtyard, but be aware if you buy a drink in the bar you are unable to drink it in the courtyard.
When I go back to Barcelona I'll definitely consider staying here again.

If you love your buffet breakfasts, this is truly one of the best ! Eat once, you are good all day. Stayed 3 nights here with a tour group. Hope they got a good discount because at $300+ USD nightly, this place is quite expensive. Wonderful central location is what you are paying for I guess. Clean and quiet rooms, smallish. Helpful but unobtrusive staff.

How many places include unlimited white wines with breakfast ! Another glass, por favor !

Hotel Portal de l’Angel

This is a very nice hotel. The staff are friendly and very helpful. We had informed them that we would be arriving very late and the night clerk was expecting us, greeted us in a very friendly fashion and gave us a map and lots of information on Barcelona despite the late hour.

Inside.
The impressive old architecture in the reception area and modern sofas give a very good first impression. The pool area is very well set out and has plenty of plants, not many hotels in Barcelona city centre have a pool so it’s a real bonus. The back of the hotel is on one side of a square of buildings which back onto the pool area so it is the internal area of the square belonging to the hotel and overlooked by the rear of the other buildings–no one else has access and they have made it look very pretty. The bar and restaurant lead out onto the pool area which gives you a lush green outlook.

The only part that lets it down is the corridors to the rooms – they have tried to be modern so its very minimalist which is a shame as it’s a lovely building.

Double room with terrace. (we would call it a balcony)
Clean and stylish.
The rooms were lovely and dark when the curtains were closed so it was easy to sleep in late in the mornings. It had every thing we needed, kettle mini bar, loads of wardrobe space and a decent size bathroom with a good shower over the bath.

The bed was very comfy although a bit odd in that it seemed to be two mattresses pushed together, I think it may have been zipped together as we did not have a problem with them moving apart.

Its true there can be a bit of noise in the mornings from the early risers or cleaning staff. Not enough noise to make me get out of the bed.

The terrace was lovely; we had double doors leading out and we overlooked the pool and the back of the other buildings which made me feel a bit like Jimmy Stewart in Hitchcock’s Rear Window. It was worth paying up for the terrace.

Brilliant location.
Its on one of the main shopping streets which is pedestrianised so there is no traffic noise and the whole hotel is very peaceful.
2 minutes walk to Plaza Cataluña. 2 minutes walk to the top of Las Ramblas. 2-3 minutes to the cathedral. Easy strolling distance to the seafront – take as long as you like walking through the old part of the city, we did it in 15 minutes looking at all the shops and sights on the way.
Passeig de Gracia, for all the high end stores- Tiffany, Cartier etc is only a few minutes walk.
Casa Batllo which is on Passeig de Gracia is less than 10 minute walk.
Sagrada Familia is about a 30 minute walk.

If you are looking on Google maps for this hotel it used to be called Catalonia Albinoni.
This is not an ultra cheap hotel but we would stay here again if we could get a good price. The pool was not really a necessity for a city break but it gave us a nice view.
