“Magnificent Melia”
Reviewed 6 June 2014

We had originally booked the Novotel near Glories through Asda Travel but due to a booking problem by their Spanish agent we were moved to the Melia Sarria. There was a problem at check in as the hotel as they had no record of our booking, but the excellent receptionist saw we had a genuine booking and said "No problem, you stay and we sort out in the morning"! It eventually turned out that Asda's agent had moved our booking back to the Novotel but nobody had told us! In the end Asda sorted this out with the hotel and we had our four nights at the Melia. I cannot praise the Hotel enough. It's spotlessly clean, the room was very clean, comfortable, quiet and modern and the included breakfast was excellent quality. All the staff we encountered were very helpful and friendly. The lifts are the best out of any hotel we've ever stayed in. You call the lift by entering your floor number before the lift arrives, and you always get your own "personal" lift. It's a brilliant system which I've never seen before anywhere in the world.
Great location as one of the tram routes terminates behind the hotel. Several of the tour bus routes have stops near the hotel, and there's several TMB public bus routes nearby which will take you direct to all the main attractions. Routes 27 and 32 take you to / from Sants railway station for the airport train.
If we return to Barcelona I would not hesitate to stay here.

We chose to extend our Tour booking in this great hotel by two extra days at the conclusion of our tour and this only confirmed our high regard for the Melia Sarria. OK, there was a slight mixup in our room allocation at the start of our four day stay but this was quickly and efficiently fixed - and up to a point, in my view, how the establishment fixes minor issues is a measure of their professionalism. The dining room was full for breakfast and maybe a little cramped but we had several tour groups dining at the same time - the Melia team seemed to handle it well and the offering was extensive: cereals, fruit, cooked meals and coffee/tea etc were all available. Room service in the late evening was quick and courteous and the reception staff were very helpful with a couple of excellent recommendations for dinning out nearby (El Patrone on one night and La Marie on the other - both a short walk away: see separate reviews). The small gymnasium was equipped with bike, treadmill etc. Overall, a fine hotel strongly recommended for anyone staying in Barcelona.

This was the first time my husband and I stayed at Melia Barcelona hotel. The staff is very kind and the location is perfect to move around the city. The room is good, not too small. The mattress and pillows are good as well as I could sleep like a baby. The breakfast also has a good selection of food. I loved the Iberian Jam and the fresh bread. I definitely will go back to Melia hotels.

My father expressed a wish to celebrate his 90th birthday with a family weekend break in Barcelona. I therefore looked for a hotel that could provide a comfortable base for the various sections of the family travelling from different places (some from as far as Australia) to explore the city and celebrate his birthday. What a success the The Level at the Melia di Sarria was!

Booking rooms on Melia’s own website was easy and we were able to book The Level rooms at weekend rates which I thought were very fair compared to other similar standard hotels. The rooms allocated to The Level guests are on the higher floors (12+ ?) and are well equipped if slightly compact and with a strange wardrobe that opens both into the bedroom and bathroom. Our rooms had good views over the City either to the South or to the (distant) sea.

Although the hotel is out of the main tourist areas, we found it conveniently situated to visit the many interesting places in Barcelona. Both the Red and Blue lines of the Hop on- Hop off open top tour buses have stops within 300 Metres of the hotel, and while the tram route to the South also terminates behind the hotel, we found the local buses provided frequent and easy access to virtually everywhere we wished to go with routes from near the hotel to MountJudic, The Ramblas, the Port area etc. (although we did get caught out at the Port area as we did not realise the day bus service ended at 22:00). Google Maps on my mobile phone was very helpful with bus times and routes. On the buses we would recommend buying a 10 journey ticket from either the nearby tobacconist or at the tram stop (card payment only) – you are able to interchange within the central area between bus, tram and train within an hour as one journey and multiple people can use the same 10 ticket card if you insert it into the date stamping machine the appropriate number of times. If buses were not convenient the hotel staff happily arranged for an especially large taxi to take our party.

As other reviewers have commented there are a number of convenience stores and restaurants around the hotel and we generally felt comfortable in the area at all times.

The particular success of our trip was the facilities and the service provided in The Level executive lounge (on the 1st Floor) in the Melia hotel. Despite the description referring to “aperitif time”, there was food and drinks (soft drinks, wine, cava, beers and some spirits plus speciality teas and coffees) available throughout the day up to 23:00 (although check the availability of food during the day if this is critical to you as I think the website description has recently changed) and the early evening tapas (hot and cold) were much more impressive than the offerings in any other executive lounge I have used. This meant the family could enjoy a snack and drink any time they wanted between the various sightseeing excursions. For breakfast we were offered either the buffet available in The Level Lounge or the full breakfast in the restaurant. We chose the latter and enjoyed the wider range of hot and cold food. On occasions where we wished something more substantial we were served from the room service menu in the Lounge and this enabled us to enjoy the drinks and the speciality coffees with our food.

All the hotel staff were extremely friendly and really couldn’t have done anything more to make the trip a success. We particularly appreciated the service provided by the receptionists, waiters and in the Level Lounge who really entered into the spirit of the occasion and made my father feel really special.

We all thoroughly enjoyed our stay and we wondered what was the next excuse for a return visit!

Room Tip: Consider booking the executive rooms in The Level if using the hotel as a base during the day.

We stayed for a conference in this hotel. They were very accommodating. The hotel staff made us feel welcome. Very friendly. Spoke English very well to help us in all our travel and touring needs. Also did money exchange right at the front desk. Rooms were very nice. Bath rooms were outstanding. Would highly recommend. Bus stop just a block away.

This is a very busy hotel which has good facilities including a gym and spa. The lifts are fully automatic controlled electronically, no buttons in the lift, just put in your floor number and it directs you to the quickest lift, excellent.
We were in 602 which was reasonable in size, well laid as was the bathroom. Shower and bath both easy to operate. Bed was very comfortable. The wifi needs more attention, only complaint was the length of time it took them to get the cases to the room, about an hour, but appreciate how busy they with coaches. Recommend you have a meal at Ginos Italian restaurant down the road, excellent, as was the pasterrie shop Natcha at Av. Sauria, 45 near the hotel - their chocolates are Devine! A good jewellery shop down a side street not too far from the hotel is Diamvany Av. Joseph Tarradellas 119, been there 40 years.
To go to the Sagrada Familia catch the 33 or 34 bus 2.15 euros, the driver will tell you when to get off, takes about 20 - 25 mins.

Stayed here two nights - would recommend only if you are the type that doesn't mind not being close to the main tourist area. I wouldn't say this is a 5 star hotel - more like a solid 4 star and would compare to a typical Westin property. Good value if the price is reasonable.

Location - it's in the financial district of the Example area - still pretty central but needs either taxi or subway ride to the main tourist areas. The Metro was about a 10 min walk away and you have to transfer once to go south into the Las Rambla tourist area and to where the Medevial area, shopping and some museums are. You can also do a short walk to the hop on hop off bus stop. It was 32 euros each way to/from the airport by taxi.
I took the Metro all the way down to the harbour and it took almost an hour with transfers and the walk to the Metro stop, and delays underground but was only 2.15 euro one way for a single ticket, less if you buy a 10 ticket. I wouldn't do the taxi thing to get aorund Barcelona unless it was late into the evening - you can get around easily on the Metro.

There was a small grocery store within one block for room supplies. And a 2nd one about a 10 min walk. Starbucks a 5 min walk. There were restaurants around as alternatives to the hotel breakfast but none actually on the block that the hotel was located on.

I could hear the road noise very loudly in the room, especially scooters and motorcycles which zipped by on the main road located on, and found the windows were not that effective. I was on a low floor and this seems to be a destination for a lot of bus tours - and they all gathered in the front talking loudly and I could hear this as clear as anything in my room to the disturbing point. Thankfully noice cancelling headphones helped. Hallway noise bled through the door easily.

Front desk staff were very helpful - check in/check out was straightforward and quick.

Room was well appointed but not overtly small for Europe - black granite in the shower.

The spa looked great in the description and pictures but was very small and basic in reality - two small individual areas to change, two small treatment rooms, a front desk, 8 places to lie down, sauna, steam that was cold, and an extremely small pool, more like an oversized hot tub. Somewhere to come for a sauna after a long business day or day touring - but certainly not a destination spa - it would disappoint anyone used to 5 star spa facilities.

Overall the vibe here is good but it's more of a group tour or business vibe since most tourist people wouldn't venture this far out of the Las Rambla, La Lluna or the Passeig de Gracia area. Try Hotwire for a good room rate where it's located in the L'Eixample zone.

Room Tip: For quieter rooms, ask for as high up as possible and not facing Av de Sarria which is busy
