“Second time round just as good”
Reviewed 15 December 2013

We have stayed at this hotel before approx. 3 years ago and enjoyed it so much we decided to rebook
We stayed for a weekend at the start of December 2013, after booking a deal with breakfast via the hotels website (that was the cheapest deal I could find at the time) We were given an upgraded room with street views (the emergency service sirens as previously stated can be a little noisy at times but it is a city) we did have an evening meal at the hotel which was good as well the breakfasts. The staff are great and very helpful .We were able to leave our luggage at the hotel for our later flight home
Overall a great hotel with no issues – Thank you for a painless and enjoyable stay

I stayed here with my husband and 1 year old for 3 nights and it was a good experience. We had poured over countless reviews before finally selecting this one and it was a great choice. The location is great, with plenty of restaurants nearby, the metro almost outside the front door, the bus stops right across the street and almost everything else within reasonable walking distance.

People had complained a lot about street noise and it did get noisy every now and then but not enough to cause discomfort - you are afterall in the city center, you can't expect country quiet. The room was a bit smaller than I expected and the bed size was average. The bathroom was okay, nothing overly special but functional. The lobby was very modern, but the room didn't quite carry the same high expectation for me from the decor downstairs, but it was okay. The staff was nice and quite helpful from time to time when we wanted to see some sights or get directions etc. But beware! one review had mentioned it was within 'walking distance' to the beach, which was one reason we selected it...uhm not quite accurate - if you call walking for almost 45mins 'walking distance'. The port to catch a cruise is ~20mins, but the beach is an extra 25mins or so. So if the beach is your primary goal, select another hotel that's closer. But there is a bus (so we found out) that takes ~15-20mins, barring traffic. As a substitute, the (small) rooftop pool was a nice touch, though we found it crowded the few times we stopped by.

I will also add though that the breakfast was average or below average the 3 times we had it. In my estimate not worth the extra $25 bucks we paid. Overall the hotel is a great value for what you pay.

Room Tip: Get rooms that are on the higher floors to help minimize street noise and to give you a better view...

Good location for sightseeing, close to port and easy walking distance to Las Ramblas and numerous attractions. However, having walked all nearby streets there was a distinct lack of good restaurants close to the hotel, many cafes and pubs but not real sit down restaurants.

The bedroom was large, clean and very comfortable. Free wifi very good and in room safe very useful. Unfortunately no tea/coffee making facilities. Bathroom fine but no extraction fan in it.

Rooms overlooking main street are very noisy throughout the night, with emergency vehicles particularly contributing to noise. Very prone to use of loud sirens even if street ahead of them is traffic free. At least 2 seem to pass every hour. Although it did not unduly bother us, some guests might find the noise very difficult.

Breakfast was very good, we did not use hotel for other meals.

Bar very small for 4* hotel and lacked any atmosphere.

Front desk staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful.

Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Room Tip: Rooms on main street can be very noiswy throughout the night

This hotel is the biggest secret in Barcelona! It is ideally located, and the Metro stop outside the main entrance is the best yet! The rooms are spacious, the bathroom large, and over-all, very modern! In room safe is handy, amenities excellent, and the buffet breakfast was well maintained, and very good selections available. If you wish coffee or tea water (no kettle furnished in-room), just ask for it, not a problem. Have your travel agent book you a package that provides everything you need/want, including bottle of Cava! Stayed 4 nights pre-cruise, wish I'd stayed couple more, there's soooo much to see and do in Barcelona, and the Barcelona Universal Hotel is at the top of my preference list! Even tho a street-view room might be a tad "noisy" for some travelers, it's nice to see what's happening, and watch the night action, rather than look at a backside of a building next door. Balcony is option for the no view rooms!

Room Tip: Street view rooms are a bit noisy, but visibility of the night activity is interesting.

What more can you ask? The hotel is in the midst of the action in Barcelona. It is near attractions, shopping, restaurants, theater and the cruise port.
We stayed here because it was close to the cruise port and spent one night before the cruise. We were able to check in early and catch a much needed nap after the overnight flight from the states. The hotel is fairly new. The rooms were clean and the HVAC worked better than any we have encountered in quite some time. The free internet was a nice touch and it worked flawlessly and had great response times. The business center was a little underwhelming, however. Just two PC's on two desks as you exit the elevators on the ninth floor. It would have been nice if they had a printer. The view of the air shaft from our room may not have been the most scenic, but the room rate was very reasonable.
The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. The included breakfast was a typical European affair with cold cuts, breads and pastries, eggs, potatoes, fruits, yogurt, and juices - very tasty.
Should we ever cruise from Barcelona again - or visit for that matter, we will stay here again.

Room Tip: If you want a room with a view of anything other than an air shaft, you will have to pay more. I had...

Had a great 2 nights here. Extremely clean room. Had everything we needed. Staff very friendly. Parralel metro stop is practically outside the hotel. Felt very safe in this area [ 2 guys ] Lots of cafes etc to grab something to eat before walking to la ramblas which is a 5minute walk. Next door you have la turka which sells 1euro beer . Cant fault the hotel.

The hotel is conveniently located immediately in front of Parallel Metro station, which means the entire city is available to you with ease. There were fast food restaurants nearby but no dining which really interested us in the immediate vicinity. We arrived late at night and were very tired so we did take advantage of the chicken joint across the street which filled our empty bellies and readied us for bed.

Check in was very pleasant and easy. Staff is very friendly and helpful. The front desk area needs to undergo renovations to bring it up to par with the rooms which were quite modern. The hotel bar is very small but the staff appeared friendly and patrons were comfortable.

The rooms were very clean, comfortable and nicely appointed. We were on the 5th floor on the street side which meant we had significant street noise on Saturday night. We didn't notice it on Friday but that may be because we were so tired from travel that we slept through any noise but we were wakened several times on Saturday night (and we are not particularly light sleepers so the noise must have been substantial). The bathroom was very clean. Water temperature, quantity and pressure were great. There were no problems with air conditioning or heat. Wireless was very good.

We only ate one meal in the hotel which was breakfast on our second day. We were pleased with both the quantity and quality of the food. We didn't expect haute cuisine but what we got was creative and tasty. In fact, my husband thought the scrambled eggs were possibly the best scrambled eggs he had ever had.

We did not use the pool or the gym facilities. The pool looked like it would be lovely in the summer but could easily get crowded in high season.

Overall, we were satisfied with value for money for this hotel. We have stayed in better and worse (and will likely do so again!). The convenience of the hotel's location is what made it a hit with us for a quick weekend in Barcelona. We would likely stay here again but only if we could have a room away from the street.

Room Tip: Street noise problem. I recommend requesting a room away from the street.
