“Great Value for money”
Reviewed 24 July 2014 via mobile

The hotel is in an okay area. All of the sights are easily accessible by public transport or walking. The staff are very polite, friendly and helpful.
The room was large and we had a balcony which didn't look out over anything other than flats but it was an added bonus.
The hotel and room were very clean and cleaned throughout our stay (weekend)
The pool was quite small but bonus for being a city centre hotel. The roof terrace near the pool was nice and clean.
Don't take anything out of the mini bar as ever the prices are ridiculous and the drinks on the roof terrace was expensive.

We stayed in this hotel the end of March 2014 for three nights. We found the hotel with no problems. Right beside the metro station. Extremely handy. Upon checking in we were told we were getting a free room upgrade. The room was on the top floor. It was amazing. The breakfast was very good and the staff very friendly and helpful. I would definitely recommend this hotel and will be returning for my next visit to Barcelona

We were surprised with the room size usually you heard complains about room sizes in Europe this was not the case with Barcelona Universal. Great value, specially the breakfasts. Outstanding service. Would stay there again.

The staff were very helpful, knowledgeable and friendly. The Hotel is located right next to the underground, a 10-minute walk to Las Ramblas and close to the sea. The rooms are adequate (standard double), they have a roof terrace with pool. The pool/teracce area is small and not always easy to get a space and the pool is not for swimming it is a large plunge pool. Breakfast was more than adequate, with a decent selection, did find the food to be cold on quite a few mornings!
The only gripe we had with the rooms was the pitiful selection of toiletries, very poor indeed, and what they did have was not good quality (shame). It might seem trivial but this lack of attention to detail can influence decision for our next trip.
Overall, a good impression would recommend but would need to bring shampoo, etc. though.

Last month we were lucky enough to book into this hotel and what a find. It was my friend's 70th so I wanted it to be special and it certainly was. The hotel staff were SO friendly and helpful making us feel very welcome. Everything we needed was within walking distance and although the main road was noisy this did not cause us any problems. Our rooms were spotless and very spacious and the air con in the room was a welcome addition. The breakfast was excellent and set us up for the rest of the day. I have already recommended the hotel to my friends and we look forward to returning to Barcelona in the future and will certainly stay in this hotel again.

Room Tip: Quieter rooms at the rear of the hotel away from the main road and on a higher floor.

Had a wonderful 4 night stay at the Barcelona Universal Hotel. Hotel in perfect location, away from the rabble of Las Ramblas, but close enough to walk to and also a metro stop outside the hotel to connect you to anywhere you need to go. Also walking distance to the Columbus statue which is a point for hop on/off tour buses and handy for the port as well.
We were given a room on the second floor which had a patio & loungers. The hotel could be a bit noisy, but there was building work going on outside which could contribute to this.
Rooftop pool area was also a plus for a relaxing hour or so after a day of sightseeing. Pool not large enough for a decent swim, but nice area with bar to chill out.
Breakfast was included in our stay and had a good selection of hot and cold dishes with plenty to eat. On until 11am - great for late nights. Check out at the hotel was 12, also a plus.

We had a great long weekend in this nice comfortable hotel and will definitely return. Loved Barcelona. So much to see and do and hope to return soon.

Room Tip: Room with a patio a must.

The Barcelona Universal Hotel is a stylish, modern and comfortable hotel but it is the professionalism and helpfulness of its staff which are its strongest feature. They were always willing to give helpful tips and advice and they have pride in both their hotel and their city. The rooms are large and well designed with a stylish decor. They are maintained and cleaned to a high standard. It is well located 15 minutes from Las Ramblas and the Gotic quarter. There is a Metro station a few steps away from the front door. If you are a reasonably confident traveller and arrive by train it is a straight forward trip on the Metro to the hotel. The Metro is shallow here so only a few steps with your suitcase up to the street and the hotel entrance. The funicular to Montjuic leaves from the same Metro Station and meets the cable cars which take you to the Castel at the top and the panoramic views of the city. The hotel faces a major road but within a block behind it are some fascinating multi-ethnic neighbourhoods.
