“Get the right Placa”
Reviewed 19 June 2014

This hotel meets the frugal traveller's needs very well as described in Rick Steves' book. Rooms were clean. The Hotel is convenient to all places on the upper end of the Ramblas.

One warning: If you take a taxi make sure the driver takes you to The Plaça del Pi. It seems the hotel is on a street with two parts. The other part of the street, about 8 blocks away, rents rooms by the hour.

Restaurants out the front door of the hotel are good.

Room Tip: The hotel has public plazas on 2 sides; upper floors are not too noisy.

If you are looking for a great location steps away from all the action of La Rambla, situated above a very active market square with street performers, this is the place for you. Keep in mind that this is a budget hotel, so while it is very clean and appears to be recently renovated, it is not appointed for comfort. Upon our arrival at the Barcelona cruise port, every taxi driver we approached informed us that they would be unable to drop us at the hotel door, and that we would need to walk a "few blocks" with our luggage. (I'm not sure that is correct, as the hotel did call us a taxi days later to take us to the airport, and they were allowed to pull up on the pedestrial-only square because the hotel called them directly.) After walking many blocks with our luggage, we were greeted by a full flight of stairs to reach the reception desk. There is no lift for you or your luggage from the street to the second floor, so only choose this hotel if you can physically carry your luggage up a flight of stairs. There is a lift from the 2nd floor to the guest room floors above. If you are hoping to secure your luggage either before or after check-in time, be aware that the "area" for this is an unsecured corner of the breakfast room, but is is right next to the front desk. The hotel management is wonderfully nice and speak perfect English. The were so kind to print out our attraction tickets - no charge. Be aware that you are required to drop your room key at the front desk each time you leave the hotel, and then ask for it upon your return. Although they said that there was someone at the desk 24-7, at 3am there was no one present one night during a 20-minute time when our son needed help with room entry. Expect street noise (music and street bar chatter until well past midnight) and adjacent room noise, but for the price and the location, this could be an ideal place for you to stay for just a few days. We stayed two nights with our family of 5, using two rooms that faced the square. We had rooms #4 and #5 which were a fine size by European standards. If we were traveling light (not with three kids and 5 40-pound suitcases), we would return for the nice management and lively location. I hope that this helps you.

Room Tip: Room #5 is right next to the breakfast room, so you can hear loud scooting of chairs. Room #4 seeme...

I booked a weekend at this place after seeing it recommended by Rick Steves and Fodor's (and reading the positive reviews here). Before you do the same, here's something to think about:

The room is tiny (even by European standards) and very basic. Okay, fine. What do you need a fancy room for, right? All you're doing here is sleeping. Yes, but...will you actually be able to sleep? The walls are EXTREMELY thin. From my room, I could hear crowds on the plaza outside, next door neighbors, guests by the elevator, guests at the service desk, etc. If one area quieted down, someone would start talking in another.

The biggest draw for other visitors seems to be the location, but really, it's convenient to one super-touristy, kitschy neighborhood (Barrio Gotico). You'd be just as well positioned staying in Eixample, which is quieter, more spacious, more authentic, and still close to Plaza de Catalunya. If you're visiting Tibidabo, Sarria, Pedralbas, Gracia, etc, you're actually quite far from those if you stay here.

It's not a luxuous hotel indeed, but very well situated and with a very charming welcoming and service. The rooms are at least clean and functional, breakfast is basic but gives a good start. If you look for a central place in Barcelone that enables you to discover it and takes a maximum benefit of your touristic stay : that's it.

Very central location in the old quarter, accessible mainly on foot and about a ten minute walk from Placa Catalunya.- which is the terminus for the Aerobus. El Jardi is located on a small square next to the church Santa Marie del Pi. So everything within a few minutes walk. The rooms are clean and basic but the beds are comfortable and the bathrooms are a good size and appear fairly new. Powerful shower. Helpful staff, excellent breakfast of tea, coffee, croissants, bread, cereals etc.....enough to sustain you on the long walks. the square has a number of good restaurants and we enjoyed the tapas from the cafe next door to the Hotel

Room Tip: Choose a large room with a balcony

Very good location. One block from La Rambla.

Staff - very good. very helpful. speaks good english.

Rooms - simple but clean. free wifi. poor insulation - so noise travels and you can hear others at night.

You do have to lug your bags up a flight of stairs before you get to the reception desk and an elevator.

Very basic, small bare-boned rooms but a fabulous location. A few blocks off Las Ramblas in the heart of the old section so it's easy walking distance to everything. The hotel is located right on a small, bustling square Placa di Pi. There's a lot of activity in the Placa during the day and well into the night. This is a budget hotel for people who want a good price, great location and don't need any amenities (no mini refrigerator, carpet). I would recommend not paying to have breakfast included and going down to the street, lots of good places including the famous Bar di Pi. Also hotel is not good for anyone with physical disabilities. Steps to reception and then steps to very small elevator.Staff is friendly but not overly helpful. Very small shower. However it's a great value for a great location when other hotels are charging double their price.
