Reviewed 26 November 2011

I would like to rate our overall experience as "good", because we felt it was better than "average", but not "very good". We stayed for 4 nights at the beginning of November, 2011. I would definitely recommend Hostal Girona if you are traveling on a modest budget as we were.

I chose the hostal because other reviewers had said it was clean, in a good location, and had character. I figured size wouldn't be a big deal for us because we planned to spend most of our time out sightseeing. That was what we got - but no ghosts in sight :-) I was nervous, because of fastturtle's comment about the lady at reception not being helpful. However, while I didn't find the staff super friendly, I felt they were nice enough, but seemed a little reserved due to the fact their English wasn't great.
Positives:
-Very clean rooms that were made up every morning
-Building and rooms have lots of character
-Free WiFi
-Safe and secure building
-Located in a good neighborhood, a short walking distance to Las Ramblas and other sights
-Close to several metro stations, including Pl. Catalunya
-Close to a grocery store and good restaurants - 2-3 blocks along Carrer de Casp heading towards Passeig de Gracia: recommend Mussol, El Grop, and a Farggi gelato (left off Casp onto Gracia)
Negatives:
-Room was a bit small, but it was fine for us
-Bathroom was too small and there was a frosted glass window in the middle of the wall, which meant a person in the room could see into the bathroom. Bit awkward for mixed gender friends traveling together
-Shower was small, but we had no trouble washing all body parts, including our feet
-The electric toilet did make noises periodically, but we couldn't hear it when the bathroom door was closed
-Disappointed the 'balcony' was actually just an enclosed patio/porch
-Rooms weren't all that well sound proofed, so we were woken up early on a couple of the mornings by other guests leaving their rooms, seemingly as they checked out. Other than those inconsiderate people we slept well. Bring ear plugs.
-WiFi, didn't work the first night we were there. Next day asked the lady at reception to reset their router and then it worked

Room Tip: Choose a 'balcony' room

This Hostal is one floor (2 floors up with an elevator) in an Eixample building. The common area decor is very nice. Room is a little small but clean - air conditioner on the wall but we did not need it in late October. No breakfast - but that is not really a problem with lots of places for morning cafe and pastry. Within easy walking distance to many of the sites you are going to tour and near the Metro for the further sites (ie., Montjuic). The reception lady who checked us in was friendly and spoke enough English to assist us fully.

Hotel Girona Barcelona – Location was ok but the room was small. Had to put our suitcases out on the enclosed porch area connected to our room. The shower was extremely small which made it hard to wash your feet. Only provided hand soap. The woman at reception was not helpful and acted as if we were imposing on her time.

Stayed 4 nights in Hostal Girona two weeks ago.
The location is very convenient - l'Eixample discrict is near downtown and within walking distance to many of the places you'd like to visit, and only a couple of minutes walk from the Metro.
There are plenty of shops and a market nearby so the lack of breakfast in the hotel is not a problem.
The room was spacious, quiet and clean and the deco of the corridor was lovely.
The bed was comfortable which is very important!

We stayed in this pension for two nights on a short break to Barcelona, and thought it was ideal for what we wanted. The location is very good - in a relatively quiet residential area but barely ten minutes' walk to the Plaza de Catalunya, Las Ramblas and the Barri Gottic. Our room was spacious with air conditioning, a small balcony overlooking the front, and a comfortable bed. The bathroom (with shower, not bath), was simple but perfectly clean. At this price it's ideal. The pension itself is in a beautiful building and sympathetically decorated with antiques etc - very characterful. The only slight downside was that the owner's English was very limited, and her staff spoke virtually no English. It's a shame they weren't able to recommend local restaurants or help book a taxi. Still, I would definitely recommend this for a long weekend, and at the price you can't go wrong!

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the front as the view and the small balcony is a nice feature
