This will be a lovely place when the renovations are complete-- I would estimate maybe by the end of September. When we booked this place last December (2012) they said they would be closed during March for renovations, but since we were not arriving until July 8, I thought it would be no problem. Unfortunately, when we arrived, the lobby and the entire first and second floors were under construction. The rooms on the 3-6 floor are "done," using the term very loosely. I would say they were "usable." There are still pieces of wiring sticking out of the wall in the rooms, including in the bathroom. However, the beds were new, the room was clean, and the bathroom was also nice. It all has a very Scandinavian minimalist feel--quite in contrast to the city of Barcelona itself, which is anything but minimalist!
The hotel is on a very quiet street, just a block off La Rambla-- very convenient to anything you might want to do in the city. The staff of the hotel is very friendly and accomodating, and this will be a great place to stay when it is all done. I should mention that at the end of our stay, the hotel did discount our room by 10 Euro per night for the inconvenience of the construction. I think for anyone who has a reservation here in late September, 2013 or later, you will probably be safe. Just contact the hotel and ask them if the renovation is complete-- but if they say there are still "some things" to be done, you might want to choose another place this time unless you are not bothered by these things. After all, you only need the room to shower and sleep in, and they are fine for that-- the construction being still done was not particularly noisy.

Thank you for your review. I am sorry you didn´t have a good impression of our hotel. You are totally right when you say that is unfinished. Much better right now. It is been closed for the last 9 months and we couldn´t keep it closed longer, this is why we decided to open the 4th and 5th floor.
Rooms are finished 100% now and the new website will be on in a week. Thank you very much for staying with us and I hope we can have you in our house in a future. I am sure you enjoyed Barcelona. Best regards. Monica

Booked a room for June 6-9, 2013, had to cancel in January. Owner promised multiple times they would refund my money as the date neared. Now they have declined to refund my money, despite the fact that the hotel is being renovated and will open until June 8th, so they would not have been able to honor my reservation anyway.

Google Translation

The Hostal Grau will be a great place to stay when the renovation is completed. The location is superb if you want to be close to the center of the city, and the owners are wonderful. In early May 2013 we had a reservation at Hostal Grau but, unfortunately, the renovation was still in progress and we were unable to stay. The owners took care of us by booking a comparable room at a very nice hotel close by. We were satisfied with the substitute and we were especially impressed with the owners who communicated with us frequently throughout the process to ensure that everything was going smoothly. They even had a beautiful bouquet of flowers delivered at our arrival at the other hotel. These are wonderful people going through a difficult renovation and handling it very well. We visited Hostal Grau one day and they gave us a tour. It is going to be fabulous when completed. I especially applaud theirs efforts in building “Green” and achieving LEED’s certification for environmental sustainability. I look forward to our next visit to Barcelona and will surely stay at Hostel Grau.

Room Tip: The suites are going to be unique.

I have had some 8 or 9 stays in Hosteria Grau and everyone of them was spotless, friendly and very hospitable.
Recently I went back to BCN and had a booking, but unfortunately, as can happen to anyone anywhere, the construction works weren't finished. The friendly and helpful owners contacted me in advance and offered to find another place to stay close-by. This is quite exceptional, I think. Everything worked out fine and I was even invited for a drink here and there.
I just noticed a negative rating of the place and can only say that - from my point of view - the comment given cannot bear the truth. The owner are very honest, loyal and grateful hosts. There is no way they would cheat on anyone.
Please do not get distracted by negative comments. Some people are always dissatisfied (for whatever reasons...).
Cheers, nice day to BCN and the world! Marty

This hosteria is near placa catalunya and you can reach everything by feet. The hostel has a nice antique interieur with beautiful details everywhere, the rooms are nice, cozy and clean, and although you are in the centro, it is calm at night.
The people who work here are always very helpful and friendly we felt very welcome.
Affiliated to the Hosteria is a nice Bar where you can get a delicious breakfast and tasty Tortillas. According to the price this was a very good choice! We will come back, thank you.
