No the pubic areas are not finished and the rooms are not 100% ready. (Maybe 95%). But the rooms are the best we found on our european trip. The price point is fine and the Hosteria is close to everything you could want. It is an old city neighborhood a block off the main streets and 2 blocks from the grand central station of Barcelona and just off the Las Ramblas.

The staff was very, very helpful. Danny was especially great. If you to can let some public areas disarray go, you will have a great time here. Barcelona was fantastic. Do not miss the Gaudi Cathedral> There is a nice bar just next to the hotel that we made our home for a cafe and patisserie in the morning and night cap site in the late ours.

It is hard for the taxi guys to find but we gave the cross streets and it was no problem.

Have a great trip.

Spike

Still not quite finished, however rooms spotlessly clean and very boutiquey,( love the reclaimed furniture and use of wood in the bathrooms. Myself and my hubby were in Barcelona to celebrate my 40th birthday and asked for a room with a view, which we got and looked out onto the quaint street. The hotel is 2 mins from Las Ramblas so is relaxed and quiet with the hustle and bustle minutes away. Staff very friendly and helpful. Bar Centric also a lovely place to have a vino and watch the world go by. A fab hotel which will be even more beautiful when finished, will definitely stay again.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 312, views onto the street and super comfy beds.

I was skeptical about staying somewhere that classifies itself as a "hostel" but after reading the positive reviews I decided to give Hosteria Grau a go. I was not disappointed. It was a fantastic place to stay!

It is close to Plaza de Catalunya and Las Ramblas and right near bus stops, metro stations and tour meeting spots. Despite its proximity to everything touristy, it is surprisingly quiet inside - the windows block out much of the street noise. The renovations were only done during the day so don't really disturb you (as a tourist you should be outside all day!)

The staff weren't overly helpful in terms of local knowledge to help out tourists, but they were nice and friendly.

Make sure you get your taxi driver to drop you off at the nearest cross street as they find it VERY hard to find the place and you will get charged extra!

The beds were unbelievably comfortable, and this to me was more like a 3 star hotel than a hostel. They also give free wifi which is great.

HIGHLY recommended!

First impressions of Hosteria Grau were not good. Extensive refurbishment was taking place & the public areas were a mess. The helpful staff made up for it by upgrading us from a triple room to an apartment. It is very close to Las Ramblas, but surprisingly quiet. Don't expect taxi drivers to be able to find it though!

Thank you very much for your review.
I do apologised for not making your stay as good as it should have been. You are right that the hotel was a bit messy. We had been closed for 9 months so we decided to re-open even with not the 100% conditions but couldn´t keep it closed for much longer. I hope you understand. The hotel looks much better at this moemnt but still one month to go. It was a pleasure having you with us and please, give us a chance so next time you come to Barcelona you can saty in hostal Grau at a special rate. keep this reply with you.
Have a fantastic sunday and wish you luck and health.
Best wishes
Monica

This will be a lovely place when the renovations are complete-- I would estimate maybe by the end of September. When we booked this place last December (2012) they said they would be closed during March for renovations, but since we were not arriving until July 8, I thought it would be no problem. Unfortunately, when we arrived, the lobby and the entire first and second floors were under construction. The rooms on the 3-6 floor are "done," using the term very loosely. I would say they were "usable." There are still pieces of wiring sticking out of the wall in the rooms, including in the bathroom. However, the beds were new, the room was clean, and the bathroom was also nice. It all has a very Scandinavian minimalist feel--quite in contrast to the city of Barcelona itself, which is anything but minimalist!
The hotel is on a very quiet street, just a block off La Rambla-- very convenient to anything you might want to do in the city. The staff of the hotel is very friendly and accomodating, and this will be a great place to stay when it is all done. I should mention that at the end of our stay, the hotel did discount our room by 10 Euro per night for the inconvenience of the construction. I think for anyone who has a reservation here in late September, 2013 or later, you will probably be safe. Just contact the hotel and ask them if the renovation is complete-- but if they say there are still "some things" to be done, you might want to choose another place this time unless you are not bothered by these things. After all, you only need the room to shower and sleep in, and they are fine for that-- the construction being still done was not particularly noisy.

Thank you for your review. I am sorry you didn´t have a good impression of our hotel. You are totally right when you say that is unfinished. Much better right now. It is been closed for the last 9 months and we couldn´t keep it closed longer, this is why we decided to open the 4th and 5th floor.
Rooms are finished 100% now and the new website will be on in a week. Thank you very much for staying with us and I hope we can have you in our house in a future. I am sure you enjoyed Barcelona. Best regards. Monica

Booked a room for June 6-9, 2013, had to cancel in January. Owner promised multiple times they would refund my money as the date neared. Now they have declined to refund my money, despite the fact that the hotel is being renovated and will open until June 8th, so they would not have been able to honor my reservation anyway.

The Hostal Grau will be a great place to stay when the renovation is completed. The location is superb if you want to be close to the center of the city, and the owners are wonderful. In early May 2013 we had a reservation at Hostal Grau but, unfortunately, the renovation was still in progress and we were unable to stay. The owners took care of us by booking a comparable room at a very nice hotel close by. We were satisfied with the substitute and we were especially impressed with the owners who communicated with us frequently throughout the process to ensure that everything was going smoothly. They even had a beautiful bouquet of flowers delivered at our arrival at the other hotel. These are wonderful people going through a difficult renovation and handling it very well. We visited Hostal Grau one day and they gave us a tour. It is going to be fabulous when completed. I especially applaud theirs efforts in building “Green” and achieving LEED’s certification for environmental sustainability. I look forward to our next visit to Barcelona and will surely stay at Hostel Grau.

Room Tip: The suites are going to be unique.
