We had a very nice stay at this place very near to the centre of Barcelona. We enjoyed good and clean rooms. Although a bit noisy. The staff, Jonah and Steve, very friendly and helpfull. The huge terras sublime. A well equipped kitchen for thous who want to cook there own meal. Its just like home. We would go there for a second time!

We spent five great nights at the Zoo Rooms in Barcelona. The location is very good because it is close to but not on La Ramblas. The 7 rooms share a complete kitchen which is great for fixing breakfast or a snack. The patio in the back is a nice place to have breakfast. Steve, the owner, and Jonathan were really helpful telling us about Barcelona and told us about the best places to eat in the neighbourhood. The rooms are clean and comfortable

Room Tip: Get a room with a balcony. It costs 12 euros more but it is worth it.

We enjoyed a relatively quiet, peaceful stay at Zoo Rooms in Barcelona but the reviews that I'd read on Tripadvisor and Zoo Room's categorization on Tripadvisor led me to believe that this place might be more of a bed and breakfast. There is no breakfast or any other meals. Just a kitchen where you are free to cook. In addition, amenities were very few. In our small room, we only got the basics. Towels, bed linens and pillows but there's no shower gel or shampoo for example. The maid only came by to clean every 3 days. I also would not call it a "boutique hotel". It's like a quiet hostel (we stayed towards the back and the terrace was quite nice to have as suggested in other reviews). All in all, the location was safe and convenient but the stay at Zoo Rooms was very basic and in my opinion was worth about a third of what we paid.

ZOOROOMS_Barcelona, Manager at Zoo Rooms, responded to this review, 18 October 2013
Dear Guest, Let's be clearer:

ZooRooms is a Guesthouse, with private en-suite rooms, a common area and a guest kitchen and a large terrace. It is NOT a hostel: there are NO shared rooms, bunk beds, curfews, lock-outs or shared bathrooms. A hostel is a budget-oriented, shared-room ("dormitory") accommodation that accepts individual travelers (typically backpackers) or groups for short-term stays. That is clearly not ZooRooms.

Our aim when designing ZooRooms was to create a Guesthouse mixing hotel-style rooms and a hostel-style atmosphere where guests have a comfortable en-suite bedroom and yet feel at home and can easily start a conversation with other guests, or cook a meal, have a BBQ or just make a cup of tea when they feel like it.

We're glad that you read about us on TripAdvisor before booking, but it is also important to read about us on our web or the website you use to book. We don't serve breakfast, and never said we do. We have a large kitchen which guests are welcome to and encouraged to use. TripAdvisor have placed us in the Inns & B&B's category, so I think that's where the confusion arose. We DO have daily cleaning in the rooms. Our cleaning staff works from 9am till around 2pm, so if guests sleep in late, they may miss the cleaning staff who are under strict instructions not to disturb sleeping guests. The towels, unless requested sooner, are changed every third morning, to do what we can to reduce waste, water bills and our carbon footprint. For stays greater than 3 nights, we change the bed sheets at regular intervals also and of course earlier if required.

I hope you agree that this is a clear and honest description of our city oasis, ZooRooms

We stayed for six nights, Zoom Rooms has a great location, slightly away from the main centre so the excellent bars restaurants and cafes nearby are mostly fequented by locals not tourists.
Steve was very welcoming, helped us with our luggage, and gave unfailing local recommendations for meals snacks and music.
There's a bus stop outside and we used buses the whole time, cheap and great for getting around town; travel on the surface meant we were orientated very quickly.
The property is well appointed with full cooking facilites, an excellent terrace away from the city hubub and hammocks and a bbq for restful evenings for those who are exhausted from the tourist trail. Also full wifi coverage, there was a computer available but we didn't use it.
Our room was, clean and comfortable with a radio/CD player and safe and reasonably quiet despite being on a main road, ear plugs are available. There were a number of other people staying at the same time; noise was not an issue they were all quiet.

If you're going to Barcelona, I'd definitely recommend staying at Zoo Rooms.

First of all, great location. We've used underground only to get to Sagrada, Guell, Montjuik or when we were too tired. Everything else — Gracia, Rambla, Catalunya — is withing walking distance. Nice neighborhood, has everything you might need: minimarkets, cafes, pharmacies etc.

Second, the hostel itself. Nice, clean, well designed, comfortable. Private bathroom in every room. Terrace (oh, terrace...) Kitchen is great and has everything you might need for a fresh breakfast or romantic dinner.

And (the last but not the least) people. Guys are doing everything to make your stay comfortable. Wish them good luck and a lot of nice guests.

Room Tip: A little extra for the terrace room will pay back. It also has conditioning (wink-wink).

We stayed 3 days in July.
Steve, the owner, is very kind. He helped us with luggage, called taxi, gave any advice we needed, and even offered us barbecue on saturday night (it was a private party but he kindly asked us to join, many thanks again!) -
Position is very good. Room is OK. Balcony is fantastic!
Cooking place and two big shared fridges also available.
Not cheap as B&B itself, but cheap to stay in the center of Barcelona.

Plus 1: free wifi
Plus 2: big cooking place and big fridges
Plus 3: nice position
Plus 4: balcony and amocks

Minus 1: unconvenient courtain in shower: water goes out easily on the floor of the bathroom.
Minus 2: the door on the street is small and cannot stay opened (no good with big luggage or babycar)
Minus 3 (very minor): no elevator, but, honestly, rooms are on 1st floor, so there are few stairways to climb. It is no good with big luggage or babycar, otherwise please don`t mind.
Minus 4: small locker (cannot store notebook or iPad)

4 minuses ==> 2 points to service. I don`t mean the service from Steve. It is the "infrastructure" which deserves 2 points. Maybe Steve can fix some of these drawbacks in the future]

Tip 1: Please be prepared: Steve (or the other guy who helps him) is not in the house everytime, but in the mornings (9-11) and evenings (21-23). He will send you e-mail one or two days before your arrival: better to answer him and also call him when you arrive at the airport.
Tip 2: taxi from airport to ZooRooms is about 27 euro and takes about 30 mins. If you have a lot of luggage, it is better to skip the airbus or train and take taxi directly from airport to the Zoorooms.
Tip 3: ask to have new tovels every day. If not, they will be provided every 3 days (but Steve informed us, it is not secret!).
Tip 4: there are about 7 rooms. Some people may be noisy coming back at night so better to use the complimentary earplugs if your sleep is light!

Overall, a nice experience.

Thanks Steve!

Paolo (Japan)

Room Tip: Choose the room with door on the balcony!

We, two my friends and I, really enjoyed staying in Zoo Rooms. First of all, because of Steve, the owner. He's very friendly and kind, speaks Russian and always ready to advise what places to visit, how to get there and there and not to get lost in the city. Secondly, the placement is really good, on Mallorca street. At third, the rooms are clean and comfortable. We also enjoyed spending time on hammocks (there are 3 of them). If I ever decide to come again to Barcelona, I will stay in Zoo Rooms
