“What you see... is NOT what you get!”

The website of this Hostel is fantastic! And the photografer made an impossible job: transforming this place in a idyllic place!

BUT... it's nothing like that! The room I stayed in had a small window which I couldn't close because it was too high. This window was my "view" to MACBA Museum and to the courtyard, the place for smokers! So I didn't sleep much because of the awful smell in my room and the noise from outside.
None of the 3 bathrooms I tried was very clean. Although it was good weather I missed a blanket, there was just a bed sheet.

And the wifi internet is just wifi in the entrance!

Thankfully was just for one night!

Overall the place suffered a very bad renovation.

It was cheap, yes, but I believe there MUST be a better place in Barcelona to stay! Search arder and you will find a better place.

This place is ok if you want cheap, we payed 175 euros for 3 nights with a double bed and ensuite bathroom. If you can find cheaper, then I would try elsewhere. The rooms are pretty clean, the service is ok, it was cleaned every day, and the staff were pretty good as well. The hotel is also in an area that has lots of cheap bars and restaurants, that aren't tourist traps...so in that sense it was good..but it is a bit of the dodgy side of town and certainly not beautiful like the Gothic side.

Things that weren't great were: Paper thin walls, if you like hearing other couples screw then this is the place for you! Nothing to stir the coffee/tea with in the morning, there is a television, but no channels, there is wifi, but only in reception. The area is a bit dodgy we witnessed a gang fight just down the road, and lots of homeless people close by.

...as you are close to La Rambla and nice bars. Other than that GatRaval is average at most. The rooms are smallish, which is ok. The communal bathrooms wer quite dirty, which I found less ok. Quite disturbing are the paper-thin walls. Every (I mean EVERY) noise from the next rooms can be heard.
All in all it was ok for my two nights stay in Barcelona, but next time I would stay elsewhere.

First things first, it is important to remember this is a *hostel* not a hotel. I think a lot of the criticism here is based on unrealistic and unfair expectations. If you are looking for a hotel, you might be a bit disappointed. I was satisfied for the 40 euros a night I paid for a double bed room. If you want the Hilton, then you are going to have to pay for it. If you are looking for an upscale hostel, you should be happy. The location of the Gat is fantastic. It is less than 5 minutes from the Universidad metro station. The airport bus also stops at Universidad, so it is very easy to get to from the airport. Gat is in the historical part of Barcelona and a short pleasant walk from Barri Gothic and Eixample. There are plenty of great bars and restaurants on the street, and close by. There is a nice coffee shop/bar literally across the street (if you are American, there is also a Starbucks 4 minutes away). The street may appear sketchy to some, but there are always many people out so I never felt unsafe. There is always a doorman at the entrance of the Gat as well. I had a room with a double bed and a shower. The room was good. There are nice high ceilings and a big window (and thick curtains which helps in the morning) with a view on the street. Beds and thread count of sheets were good. The common bathrooms were always clean. There are some nice design touches to the rooms. Well above what I am used to in other hostels. My only major criticism is noise. The street outside is lively, and therefore fairly loud until late into the evening. If you want to avoid this, ask for a room facing the courtyard. The walls between certain rooms are really thin, which can impede your privacy and/or quiet. You can really hear it when your neighbor opens or closes the door and when there are people talking or watching television and when people talk when walking through the hallways. I stayed in the low season so I can only imagine how it must get in the summer. If you are a light sleeper or someone who goes to bed early, this will be an issue. Other than that the staff are really friendly and helpful. The stay includes a breakfast, which is appreciated but minimal (prepackaged muffins, orange juice, and Nescafe). So overall, I was quite satisfied with my stay but I don't know how this place compares to other places in the same price range. I hear the other Gat a few blocks away is nicer and quieter (but also more expensive).

I stayed in this hostal at late notice, and feel like I was ripped-off. It is a central location off La Rambla in Raval, and the rooms are a decent size for a single and clean. But the street can feel unsafe late at night if you are a female on your own, and there is no free wifi. 70 euros a night is scandalous when you see what else you can get in BCN for that. Try www.hotelconstanza.com or www.bcnfashionhouse.com.

I have just returned from a trip in Barcelona and I have to say that my stay at the Gat Raval Hostal was absolutely dreadful!! With one of my best friends, we were looking for a hostel in the centre of the city for two nights and this "hostel" was recommended by both the Lonely Planet and the Guardian... and I still do not understand why!! This hotel is a complete joke: the entrance is dirty and hard to find, the area is unsafe, the room was very small with no furniture, our "window" (if I may call it a window...) was directed towards a wall with a plastic roof which basically hid any rays of light; one electrical plug was available, and the hotel is very noisy. The rooms do not look at all like on the website and are completely overpriced. There are no shared place like in a hostel and the Gat Raval boasts a "terrace" which is basically a tiny balcony for smokers (which I am)! We planned to stay two nights there... but we left after one night to go to another hotel... Positive features: it's close to las Ramblas and the receptionist was fairly helpful... In a nutshell: don't go there!

Having looked at the website, we ought to have looked at Tripadvior so the reviews would have put us off. And rightly so - this place is horrible, smelly, and the staff are unhelpful. The room had a pillar coming through it, was tiny, and in no way resembled the website pics. The floor was dirty, the place is noisy and the street looks and smells dodgy. To add insult to injury, Wi-Fi costs €6.50/hour!!! Incredible! STAY WELL AWAY FROM THIS DINGY HELLHOLE! If they spenct half as much on standards as on their snazzy website, they would do well. We left immediately and booked in to a nearby hotel for an extra €20/night. Well worth it!
