Saint Mary the Sea:

In Ribera district of Barcelona, there is an imposing church built in 1329-1383 at the height of Catalonia’s maritime. It is a good example of Catalan Gothic Architecture.

Having read Ildefonso Falcone's "Cathedral of the Sea" this church was a must for me.

It might not be as lavishly decorated as some of the other churches in Barcelona, but it makes up for it with its simple beauty and calming atmosphere.

Read the book, visit the church!

There are many other more famous churches in Barcelona, but this one is definitely worth a visit if you are in the area. It is in a small square and the exterior is plain, Most of the tour groups just peak inside, but it is worth the nominal admission. The inside is old, dark, and cool. The church suffered a fire that destroyed much of the decorations, but the windows are lovely.
And it was a peaceful place to sit quietly and cool off.

We were lost in Barri Gotic when we suddenly came upon this church, tucked next to a series of small plazas.

It felt as if we were transported back in time as we entered the quiet, dark church with a huge glowing rose window and imagined what it must have been like to live in Barri Gotic 8 centuries ago.

There was a small display of some of the church's silver treasures, which were beautifully ornate.

The basilica is very dark and dreary. Interesting to see but not to spend much time in. There are many better ones to visit.
