“Overpriced and run down”

Although rental premises in Barcelona and Costa Brava are normally priceyer than in many other attrcactive places in the Mediterranean, this one seems to be rather overpriced. First about what was good, then about the downside.

The apartment has a number of merits: 500 metres to a nice public beach (and a sea promenade for those who fancy long walks or exercises), a choice of restaurants round the corner, a reliable wifi connection, a large fridge, a functional washing machine and a small balcony with a dryer, a bus stop almost at your doorsteps. The area is safe although a bit dull. The walking street of Rambla del Publenou is a local gem just two or three blocks away.

The disadvantages are numerous. No air condition. That's paramount in a city like Barcelona in high summer. For us who come from the north of Europe it was like sitting in sauna 24/7 - very difficult. You need to keep the windows open day and night which may help bring the temperature down from 35 degrees C to 30 but would let the street noise and mosquitos keep you awake anyway. This is quite a busy neighbourhood, so the traffic doesn't really stop at night, and mosquitos are mosquitos just like everywhere where they are, many. Air condition would solve all of that. Other things are important too, but not as grave as this one.

The apartment looks and feels a bit too shabby for the price you pay for renting it. The kitchen and bathroom need some fix-ups. The sofa in the main room looks tired and not entirely clean. Other details that don't add much value are the dictance to groceries and the metro as well as the absence of international TV channels.

I would recommend that the hosts take initiative to draw a map of local grocery shopping. In Barcelona, there is no tradition of signs to help visitors locate the nearest supermarket, so a map of them in the vicinity of the apartment would be highly appreciated by the guests.
