Owner description: Visiting Barcelona but looking for something different? Want to scratch the surface of this beautiful mediterranean gem and connect with the locals and Barcelona's social reality? How about joining a tour of the old town led by formerly homeless tour guides..... Barcelona receives 7.5 million visitors each year and is now the 4th visited European City, and 10th globally... and yet there are over 3,000 people who sleep on the streets of the city every night. At Hidden City Tours we have set about putting one of the city's strengths (tourism) to work to solve one of the city's social problems (homelessness). We also hope to challenge myths and change attitudes towards homelessness along the way. English, German and French speaking guides recruited from local homeless charities and social services. Guides also speak Spanish All tour guides are previously homeless having lived on the streets of Barcelona, and have undergone a 3 month training program to become tour guides Small and personal groups allowing you to connect with your guide and creating an intimate experience. The idea of the project being to create employment so it's not in our interest to run large groups with 1 guide! Tour starts in Plaza Nova by the Gothic Cathedral and ends at the world famous Boqueria market on the Ramblas Our walking tour lasts around 2 hours Our guides are not just employees, they are partners in the company as they receive 50% of the net income from the tours Local charities and social services can help with food and accomodation but they can only go so far. The return to work rate for the homeless is around 1% according to official stats but we think that it's about zero, given the current state of the economy. Yet many of Barcelona's homeless are extremely capable and willing individuals who just need a little help and direction - and to be given that crucial second chance in life to shine. Hidden City Tours aims to be that second chance, and in doing so offer a truely inspiring and eye opening visitor experience.

“A must do if visiting Barcelona”
Reviewed 24 April 2014

I live in the city and chose to take the Hiddencity tour with two friends visiting from England this February. We had Ramon and José as guides and both gave an incredibly interesting, individual and thought provoking tour. The content and route was equally as interesting to me, somebody with some knowledge of the city, as it was to my visitors who were new to it. I can't recommend the tour enough, a true representation of Barcelona, old and new.

“An Alternative View of Barcelona - Great Opportunity for Visitors”
Reviewed 15 April 2014

Traveling from California to Barcelona, we had a wonderfully informative and entertaining English speaking tour with Ramon last month. We saw parts of Barcelona that I doubt we would have ever discovered on our own and Ramon was an awesome guide. Thank you for offering this guide service. We want to come back for one of Ramon's cooking workshop! Highly recommend this tour.

“A great insight to some of the hidden places and less known facts”

A fanstastic way to see parts of the city you may not stumble across yourself and hear about another side of the history. All this and helping the homeless of Barcelona too.

“Absolutely unique and not to be missed!”
Reviewed 9 April 2014

A group of friends and I joined a tour last weekend after reading about the tours in the UK press. We had no idea what to expect - and were very pleasantly surprised!!!!! Our guide Jose took us on a tour of the old town, showing us a Barcelona that you won´t read about in any guide book. The tour is a clever mix of classic corners of the gothic quarter, with a hidden past, and present day Barcelona as it struggles to come to terms with the the social reality of 2014. The tour was peppered with personal stories from our charming guide Jose. Absolutely unique and not to be missed!

“Great idea and great implementation”
Reviewed 2 April 2014

What we loved about the tour is how balanced it was: part of it is "classic" sightseeing and part of it is the "hidden" tour: showing places of soup kitchens, the "used to be getto", etc. Our guide was great, Jose told us great stories about the city and also snippets of his life. He was honest, personal and very real. Thank you, Jose for the great afternoon!
