We enjoyed another return two night visit to H1898. On the N end of La Rambla, the hotel is close to much of what a visitor will want to see in Barcelona and thus well located for tourists who are not deterred by the bustle outside or the not-quite-gentrified nearby El Raval. The Catalunya metro, a major transport hub, is a five minute walk.

The hotel is an elegant 21c conversion of a late 19c townhouse, later used as the HQ of the Philippines Tobacco Company (hence the name). The decor in the public areas is designer black with wood accents and some imaginative photographs.

The excellent leisure facilities include two pools - one on the roof terrace with great views over the city and the elegant other in the basement, which also has a gym, sauna and steam room.

Room size varies. Our ‘de luxe’ room and its bathroom were ’compact’ - reflecting our relatively low room rate - but elegant, well designed and well equipped (apart from unnecessarily complicated lighting).

WiFi is free, fast and uncomplicated throughout the hotel.

Breakfast is an excellent buffet with good staff support and eggs cooked to order.

All the staff we met were efficient and pleasant.

We thought the hotel quite good value at a room rate of c. $270 including breakfast.

We would grade the H1898 as four star plus and recommend it to tourists not on a tight budget..

We loved every moment of our stay at Hotel 1898. We chose it primarily for it's superb location and spa facilities but we were taken aback by the luxurious and stylish finish, cleanliness and friendliness of staff.

We stayed for 3 nights. The bed was comfortable, I used the pillow menu to change my pillows for more firm ones. The bathroom was a good size and the room (standard) had robes and slippers for both of us which were changed each day if we wanted fresh ones. The toiletries had a lovely citrus smell and having tea and coffee facilities in the room was the icing on the cake for me!
The roof top bar was amazing and even though the weather was a bit chilly ,we sat there on our first night and the staff gave us blankets to wrap around ourselves so we could enjoy the view of Barcelona.
We went to the spa in the basement. Small but perfect ,with several hydro jet areas in the pool and a large steam room and sauna.
All the staff in this hotel that we met were extremely friendly and helpful. Our room was 312 and faced a covered courtyard so we didn't have any outside noise, although it made the room a wee bit dark. This did not lessen our delight at finding this lovely hotel and we will definitely stay here again when we return to Barcelona.

This was our fourth stay at this wonderful hotel. Location right on Ramblas
is so convenient for everything, just a short walk from airport buses.
The staff are very welcoming and efficient. Rooftop pool area is a
lovely area for relaxing after a busy day sightseeing. Rooms are
beautiful and spotlessly clean.

A sound, efficient city-center hotel directly on Las Ramblas. Some unusual rooms due to the hotel's conversion from a tobacco warehouse. Pleasant pools, though the roof-top is only for summer, small gym and spa facility add value.

Room Tip: Inside rooms may be quieter than those on the street; probably quieter on higher floors as well. A/C...

Stayed here with my wife for one night, and from the welcome onwards it was a delightful stay. The room was a prestige and far more spacious than I expected, with wonderful amenities and chic lighting which managed to keep its faux old world charm, even down to having an old cigar box facade as the information and stationery set.

Throughout the hotel the same orientalistic decor pervaded throughout, and it felt as if one were in a malayan outpost than on perhaps the most hectic street in europe. Great location, only a 5 minute walk to Plaza Catalunya and the shopping, straight up La Ramblas. Barrio Gothica was also only a short walk away.

Excellent facilities also abounded, with a beautiful plunge pool the highlight. It was too cold to use the outside pool, but even that looked inviting in March!

Loved it so much, we have booked again as soon as we got back as an early summer birthday treat :-)

Stayed at this hotel for a weekend in March. Very impressive decor, helpful staff checking in. Room 406 was reasonable size and more then comfortable. Best bits was the location , literally walk out onto the La Rambla which is centre of it all and the rooftop pool and bar area. Fantastic views over this incredible city !!
I would have given them 5 stars but my partner left his sunglasses in the room, we obviously offered to pay whatever it cost to have them returned but they did say we needed to arrange courier which is obviously doubly hard sorting from the UK. Little things like this are the difference between 4 and 5 * hotel.
Other then this though very pleased with our choice !
