We are staying at this hotel at the moment. We were persuaded by other trip advisor reviews. The ambience is certainly very nice, but the worries started when we checked in. Check in time is 3pm but we didn't get our room until 430pm. It is a very noisy room directly underneath the pool side terrace on level 7. You can hear everyone walking around. Unforgivably they won't let you iron your own shirts. They charge 7 euros or so per shirt to do so. And bear in mind this is a very expensive hotel in the first place. This is just an unacceptable rip off in this day and age. It looks good therefore but this hotel is more interested in what it can charge than the service it renders.

Dear Sir,

First of all we would like to thank your time sharing your experience in TA.

It is correct that Check In time is guaranteed at 15h00 and we work hard to have all rooms available by that time. We advanced our departure time to 11h00 a.m. to ensure this point to our guests and work hard daily to provide always the rooms as soon as possible. We apologize for your case which is not our normal procedure.

We also inform you that we do not have irons and ironing boards to borrow to the rooms for security reasons, as all the furniture in our establishment is colonial style and made of wood. We advise of this in all the selling portals. However, we apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

If you give us a second chance, we would like to change your impression of us next time your come to Barcelona.

Sincerely,

Upon entering this fine hotel, you walk into a beautiful reception area of rich classical decor, irresistible sitting chairs and cozy sofas. Everything whispers relaxation and comfort. The front desk, reception staff, are meticulous with service and extremely accommodating answering questions and assisting with local needs. Handsome gentlemen and women dressed most professional and very respectable. I was able to get a wealth of information regarding bus routes, train, local restaurants and points of interest to make my stay most enjoyable. We thoroughly enjoyed the wonderful morning buffet, which was included in my Costco Travel package deal. The morning breakfast buffet was one NOT to be missed, as we enjoyed SO many delicious types of food. It is the finest buffet I've ever seen or tasted in my experience. We were truly pampered with comfortable beds, deep tubs, awesome shower head and water pressure, complimentary tea time, and robes/slippers to use during our stay. Room lighting choices gave us the opportunity to turn the lights down from welcome bright mode to tv/relaxation mode, to reading mode and then nightlight, if needed. The maid service is just as top notch as everything else, as these fine individuals kept our rooms clean, tidy, and we never lacked anything in toiletries. We even came back to our rooms every evening to find turndown service! What a truly pampering experience! Both swimming pools are warm and it was nice to have either option. We enjoyed the hot sauna and steam rooms as well. We were disappointed the hotel didn't have a hot tub, which would've been wonderful to relax in after a day of walking. We didn't use the exercise room, but it appeared more than adequate with free weights, stationary bike, stair stepper and treadmill. We regularly used both indoor and rooftop bars and all drinks ordered were meticulously made by well experienced bartenders. Dinner was exceptional and highly recommend. We stayed on the 3rd floor, and weren't bothered by the street noise. Barcelona is a city busy with nightlife up into early morning hours, so I recommend getting a room either higher up and away from the main Las Rambles should you need a quieter room for sleep. Staying in Hotel 1898 made our first trip to Barcelona much more pleasurable. I was sad to leave when vacation was over. This hotel is truly unique in every way and stands out in providing the guest with a most relaxing stay.

Room Tip: If you need more quiet to sleep, ask for a room further away from Las Rambles.

We stayed here earlier in 2014 and it is a true 5 star hotel. luxury from top to bottom & the perfect location - right on La Ramblas. The staff were discreet & professional, and they made us feel special the moment we arrived. The rooms downstairs and the roof are stunning & the bedroom oozed total comfort. Will definitely come back to Barcelona & will definitely stay here again.

Recently visited with my husband and our parents, and we were not disappointed!
The location is perfect... Close enough to walk to the beach or explore the city.
The hotel is classy, the bedrooms stylish modern and well equipped with tea/coffee.
The beds are huge and very comfortable. The bathrooms are clean, spacious with a good hair dryer.
We booked a room only service as the breakfasts were quite expensive, and being so central, it was easy to step out and find plenty of affordable places to eat. We did however, book continental breakfast in our room on our last day and that was reasonable.
The roof terrace is wonderful, great views and a lovely way to relax on the comfy sofas or daybeds with a cold glass of wine and some great tapas.
The staff were fantastic and with their recommendations, we dined at 2 superb restaurants.
The only negative was that our room on the 4th floor overlooked a small courtyard at the side of the hotel and the noise from the restaurants below went on into the early hours. A drawback from being so central, but maybe new double glazing may help!
Would definitely recommend the hotel, and would definitely stay again!

Room Tip: Choose a high floor... As street noise can disturb.

Overall, we had a wonderful time at Hotel 1898. We had a room that didn't face Las Ramblas and could still hear a bit of noise but nothing that prevented us from sleeping (we were on the 6th floor). Our room was the classic size but was very spacious. The bed was comfortable and the bathroom was amazing. The staff was very polite and the extras (like new slippers every day) were great. I subtracted a rating because we were not able to use the 20 euro coupon we received for booking online. The coupon stated that it could be used for any extra charge from the restaurant or bar but when we tried to use it on a breakfast buffet charge (we got the buffet for 2 one day) at check-out, we were told that the coupon couldn't be used on the buffet (which you get at the restaurant and which is charged to your room). Needless to say this was not written anywhere on the coupon. The hotel's failure to honor the coupon was particularly disappointing because I wasn't feeling well and barely ate my food (I went to keep my husband company, basically). Prior to this incident, I would have been happy to come back but now I'm not so sure, as it left a bad taste in our mouth. After we spent almost $400 per night, nickel and diming us over 20 euro seems very petty on the part of the restaurant, especially since this "no buffet" rule is not written on the coupon.

My wife and I enjoyed 3 beautiful nights in Barcelona atop the roof finishing each night off at La Isabella. Victoria and the other staff (so sorry I can not remember their names) were all incredible and worked so well as a team. It speak to the management when all of the staff treat you as if you are their only client. Beautifully clean hotel in the middle of everything (especially being next door to the market!!). Highly recommended!!

Room Tip: Deluxe room with patio was well worth it for us
