“Good location and facilities, elegant, excellent service”
Reviewed 12 October 2009

On the N end of La Rambla, the Hotel 1898 is well located for tourists who are not deterred by the bustle outside and is close to much of what a visitor will want to see in Barcelona. The hotel is an elegant 21c conversion of a late 19c townhouse, later used as the HQ of the Philippines Tobacco Company (hence the name). The decor in the public areas is designer black with wood accents and some imaginative photographs.

The excellent leisure facilities include two pools, one on the roof terrace with great views over low rise Barcelona - and with a bar offering tapas - and the other in the basement, beside a small gym, sauna and steam room.

Internet access is free from an elegant 'library'.

Room size varies. We stayed three nights in a well sized 'superior' room which had a view over a quiet side street and was candy striped and elegantly equipped.

We used the restaurant only for its excellent continental breakfast (full buffet also available).

All the staff we met were efficient and pleasant.

Barcelona is not short of good hotels but we won't look further on our next visit. Highly recommended.

Tips:
(i) the excellent Onze Cent in the adjacent Le Meridien is one of the few fine dining restuarants open in the early evening and its window tables offer superb people watching opportunties.
(ii) we also enjoyed an excellent meal in the (relatively) nearby and Gaudi designed Casa Calvet.

You never know what to expect in a hotel in Europe. This hotel was a wonderful experience. The staff is attentive and willing to help. The rooms are large for Europe and done very nice, the bathrooms have great amenities. The hotel has to great pools one in a grotto that is really fun and one on the roof. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone. It is also right on La Rambla in the center of all Barcelona has to offer.

My husband and I only had one night in Barcelona, but Hotel 1898 helped us make the most of it. The location could not have been better... right on Las Ramblas and near where the hop-on / hop-off busses pick up. Also within easy walking distance of the Cathedral and tons of restaurants.
The front desk staff was very helpful and got us tickets for the hop-on / hop-off, for a flamenco show, and recommended a nice place for dinner.
The rooftop area was a very nice addition.
Be warned, though... we had to wait in very long lines at all the major attractions. We didn't even get to go inside La Sagrada Familia.

In short: this hotel was located perfectly for us in what we thought to be the most interesting Barcelona district. We would agree with what most other users have said about the hotel, i.e. the location, rooftop bar and pool is the biggest draw, whilst the mix of colonial and contemporary design gives the hotel a unique look and feel. Very comfortable beds, rooms were kept spotless and we loved the pillow menu on offer.

On the minus side, we had problems with the amount of storage space available in our 'classic' room (and we only had one hand-luggage sized suitcase each!) and the main 'minus' for us was the attitude of the hotel staff (apart from the cleaners, who were lovely). On the one hand, they were very helpful when approached, very professional and efficient. But no-one we spoke to in the bars or at reception was anything above civil. We were hard presed to get a smile from anyone, attempts to engage in conversation with the bar staff were rebuffed and generally we felt that their approach to guests was quite clinical. Of course this is not the worst thing that one could say about a hotel ever, but nonetheless it detracted somewhat from our stay. And was probably the reason that whilst the open rooftop area is lovely, we couldn't wait to get out of the lobby bar the one night we went there for a drink - the place felt like a mausoleum.

As far as cost is concerned, I'm not entirely convinced that there aren't better value for money 4-star hotels in Barcelona, but nor did we feel 'ripped off' for what we got.

This hotel is located right on the LaRambla! Great service, the rooms are nicely equipped and comfortable. I could always find someone who spoke English. Very nice, when we return to Barcelona, we will most definately stay there again!

Barcelona has a lot of great hotels, but H1898 far exceeded our expectations. It sits right on Las Ramblas (not for everyone) so you're near everything. The rooms were nice, clean, and average sized. The staff was courteous and the front desk helped out tourists as there was no true "concierge". The real draw of this hotel though is the roofdeck. WOW! An amazing 360-degree view of Barcelona. The pool itself is underwhelming but the chaises to lay out in the sun are comfortable and the staff brings you water. We ate at the rooftop restaurant our last night in Barcelona and there isn't a better place to see sunset. The food was excellent, unique take on tapas, and I loved the lounge chairs and big comfy couches. Not the cheapest place to stay in Barcelona, but if you plan on spending any time at the hotel itself, the H1898 roofdeck is the place to be!
