“Great Atmosphere and location”
Reviewed 23 November 2013 via mobile

Palace style house in the heart of sizzling barcelona. Rooms basic but all you need, ample recreation areas and great atmosphere. Many sites and especially night life places in easy reach, still a good night s rest. Ask for Ruben s private city tours, it s a treat !

A shower in front of the window even with a judiciously placed mirror and basin may not be everyone's style. The rooms are minimalistically furnished with shapes and the predominant colour is white. The colour changing bead curtains are now suffering from non-working LEDs and although striking now give the impression of needing some TLC. Having said that the staff are great and the concept of a nice, no-frills hotel is appealing. Try it for something different, you may like it!

Room Tip: Pay for the larger rooms overlooking the street as they are worth it, the street is not that noisy a...

To be totally honest, we had a strange feeling right after arrival first night in this hotel, couldn't understand how do we feel about it. A lot of mirrors and two ground levels in the room made feel differently. Next day it was obvious we enjoyed and liked it. Good price and quality. Very interesting hotel with great attitude and service. Long breakfast from 7-12AM. Next room's flushing could be heard, but it didn't bother us somehow at all. Car parking at underground parking place for 26Eur per day. Nice restaurant around the corner.
If you're waiting for very traditional accommodation, then this hotel isn't for you. If you're ready to find something different and interesting, then go for it.

Room Tip: We liked bigger rooms size a lot.

We had a four night stay at this hotel on a short break. The hotel is clean, functional and in an extremely good location for all the local sights. However, what sets this hotel apart is the helpfulness and efficiency of the reception/bar staff there. We had a problem with a pre-booked transfer back to the airport that we had made ourselves and the staff did there utmost to help us sort this out with one member even escorting us on foot to try and meet our taxi as we were unsure of where we were going. When this still didn't arrive he quickly and efficiently arranged another taxi for us enabling us to make our flight in time. I am sure at a five star hotel a member of staff wouldn't have given us this service! Well done Chic & Basic.

I stayed here for a few days as a short family holiday with my wife and two grown-up offspring. We all loved it! Friendly reception staff and slightly edgy interiors made for an exciting arrival. The room layouts and interior lighting schemes were fun too. Cleverly laid out to make the most of the old traditional building which has been converted in an unconventional but contemporary and imaginative way. Sound insulation between the rooms was pretty good. If we went again though we would choose one of the rooms overlooking the interior courtyard as there was quite a lot of noise from the street below (to be fair, mostly traffic, scooters etc. but also the odd loud voices) and we are light sleepers, but my kids, who live in Central London, didn't really think it was a problem. And it was nice to have the balcony overlooking the street. Everywhere was very clean and tidy..there is a nice lounge at first floor where you can chill out, make proper coffee and teas, all complimentary. No problems with wifi. We only had breakfast in the hotel on the first morning for the extra cost of E9 per person.....it was OK but we found other places around that were cheaper. The hotel's in a great location..El Born is like a separate little local district with lots of squares with nice bars and restaurants, tapas places etc. around..we spent 6 enjoyable days exploring Barcelona. It was all we needed and if visiting again would stay at Cheap & Chic Born again.

If you go to Barcelona, it's certainly not to stay in your room, but these ones are big, clean, modern with style. In fact, you do not know if your are in a museum or an hospital. The and coffee available for free, sport machines available as well, poor internet but good enough to check your emails

In reverse order:
The ugly: perhaps only the inability to check into one's room before 3 p.m. which was an annoyance especially after a very early start, but easily forgotten by leaving one's bag at the hotel and stepping out into this throbbing city.
The bad: the wireless connection was poor in my room but soon remedied by....
The good: the staff make this hotel what it is. They are young, enthusiastic, incredibly friendly and go out of their way to make your stay with them a success. I asked at the time of booking online for a quiet room at the end of the corridor and got exactly that. My annoyance with the poor wireless connection was soon put right by the loan of an ethernet cable, and some tapas in a local joint recommended by them. Indeed their recommendations were always well placed. Its location in one of the trendiest parts of town is also a big plus. All in all this hotel does what it says on the tin. It is chic - its reception/bar/breakfast area is informal, hip and simpatico - and relatively basic, so if you want luxury this place is not for you. But if you are just after a room that is clean and comfortable and in the heart of the buzzing Born, then look no further because what it lacks in facilities it more than makes up for in the warmth and helpfulness of its staff.

Room Tip: If you specify any special requests at the time of booking then judging by my booking your requests...

A hotel that combines the traditional with the futuristic in a privileged environment: a building that is more than 100 years old with spectacular ceilings over seven metres high and spaces designed to surprise and enjoy. Its rooms, with an original glass shower in the room, are chameleon-like: you can change the colour depending on your mood. The passageways, full of enchantment and mystery, mutate with colour changes from the lights in the rooms. Enjoy our “Beyourself” and “Helpyourself” area in the common area where you can relax listening to music, reading any of our books or having a coffe, tea or water for free. Also, if you want to move about the city at your own pace, bicycles are available to rent. Once you try them, you won’t want to use any other transport in Barcelona. You can also enjoy our chic&basic tour, a two hour walk through Ciutat Vella in which we will mix history with some curiosities, as well as gastronomic and nightlife suggestions. Enjoy it on Tuesdays, Thursdays or Saturdays at 10:00am. ... more   less
