My girlfriend and I escaped for a romantic long weekend. A better hotel could not have been found! If you're looking for something a little bit quirky, contemporary and with a great location, look no further.

There was complimentary water available from the lounge room area, we helped ourselves to the bottled water before every exploration! There is also a great little coffee machine and free biscuits to help kick start your day.

Our bedroom had an accompanying balcony looking on to the street outside. We loved the feel of it and the contemporary lighting that could be adjusted to suit the mood. Not something I would go for but it just works!

Everything is close by, from Las Ramblas to great restaurants and the Segway tour. The Segway tour I highly recommend!

Overall this place is great, we will be going back!!!

The name sums it up accurately and largely this concept works in it's favour. I stayed for a week and was generally impressed. The appearance and especially the beads do lose their novelty eventually but the integration of bathroom to bedroom in a relatively small area is great. I thought the free water was fantastic and although it doesn't seem much you can take a few bottles with you when you go out, save buying it at great expense. Thought the sleep quality was great, with near blackout blinds, very comfortable beds and in a quiet area making for a very enjoyable stay. Don't think you can find many more hotels in Barcelona with so much going for it at the same price although could certainly do with a few small upgrades, but would generally recommend.

The pros:
Friendly and helpful staff on reception 24hrs
Good, safe location
Comfortable beds
Free water etc
Relatively cheap compared to the rest of Barca
Quiet

The cons:
Could do with a better clean and a lick of paint
The beads get a bit irritating sometimes
Cheaply furnished and badly fitted (bathroom leakages etc)
Wifi (found it only really worked in the reception area)

Dear otjs

Thank you very much for your review.
Good to hear that you had a good stay with us.
You have mentions that you had problems with the WIFI ,we just fund a resolution for this problem, and now its working much better, not only in the Reception and in the help yourself area, as well in the rooms.

Best regards from Barcelona and we hope we can welcome you again in chic&basic Born

We were very pleased with our stay here. Firstly, the location is excellent, being a stones throw away from the Arc de Trionf and a few minutes walk to the old city. As mentioned before, the hotel and the reception are in two different building, but once you are aware of this, it presents no problems. Staff are very friendly and helpful, with someone available at the front desk 24hrs. The hotel is very chic (obviously) with toy animal heads decorating the corridors, which I thought was a fun touch. The room we were in was No. 14, overlooking the main road, but noise was not an issue. Your basic room really, comfortable bed, nice powerful shower, plenty of closet space. Small iPod adapter by the bed, and table and chairs on the balcony. There is a small common area with free tea, coffee and water, which is a nice bonus for those hot summer days. We didnt get the breakfast, so cannot give any details. The only bad points are the wifi, which as mentioned before, is very slow, the bathroom door did jam up a lot, but this was not a major problem. All in all, we were very happy with our stay here, and would recommend it. However, if you are looking for a traditional hotel with room service etc etc, this is not for you.

Chic & Basic is all about image and branding. While the concept is interesting and sometimes well-executed, overall the place just feels strange.

The hotel has an excellent location, great price, and very friendly and helpful staff. The lobby is nicely decorated with a great lounge ambiance. I enjoyed the breakfast buffet, which is a great value if you like to eat half your daily calories in the morning like me. But at the end of the day, I just wanted a comfortable room to sleep in, and this was not the right place.

The vibe they are going for is highly stylized, uber-trendy, too cool for school. In reality, the place is filled with tired IKEA furnishings in need of some scrubbing. The beaded curtains outside each room and in front of the showers look cool at first, but it gets old when you have to touch the grimy plastic to push them out of the way. The shower-in-the-middle-of-the-room concept is bold, but our room had an overpowering odor of mildew, probably because the shower leaked onto the wood floor with every usage. Wi-fi was painfully slow, to the point where it was basically useless.

Chic & Basic Born gets some things right, but not the important things. Though I liked some aspects, I would probably not stay here again.

staying here during my Spanish course, reasonably priced, great and inexpensive breakfast, bicycle almost for free, friendly staff, free coffee and cookies, great location, within walking distance to Barcelonetta and Ramblas! tastefully decorated modern rooms in historic building.
