“Great location, interesting room, nice staff”
Reviewed 13 June 2011

I booked the hotel based on tripadvisor recommendations. The location is great - in Plaza Catalunya, near shopping streets and restaurants. The room was very interesting – the sink was right in the entrance and a glass door would isolate either the shower or the toilet seat. Maybe this is not for everybody. The breakfast was decent, nothing spectacular, but ok. The internet was free but poor signal in the room.

Room Tip: Rooms towards the back are quiter!

A beautifully decorated hotel at the very best location at the middle of barcelona, catalunya plaza. Very nice staff, helpfull and friendly. Large, beautifully decorated and comfortable rooms.
And all at a very reasonable price.

Stayed here for 2 nights prior to a cruise. Firstly we arrived early, around 11am, and as expected we were too early to check in which was fair enough. The receptionist said to come back around 1-2pm and so we set off to get tickets for the hop-on hop-off bus, but before we left I asked if we could have a plaza view and she happily said yes.

After going around on the bus and lunch at hard rock cafe next door we came back and the receptionist had changed. No worries surely this receptionist will see the notes the last one made about our room specification? nope, we were given a room on the 1st floor overlooking the courtyard. I would usually complain but at this point I didn't have it in me.

The room was big, but maybe too big. There was a big empty space between the bed and sofa which is great if you have a family of four who can pull out the sofa, but for a couple it was just odd. The TV was also in an impractical location and almost impossible to watch from the bed (see photo). I agree with past reviews and the lighting system, the lights are just too bright and should have a dimmer switch. Criticisms over, the bathroom area was lovely with rainhead shower and overall the air con was efficient and surprisingly the view from the room was quite nice with a rustic view to the classic spanish buildings around.

Breakfast was included in the price and there was a nice selection of hot and cold items. Always seats available and was nice to eat in the conservatory each morning. This hotel seems to cater to a lot of business travellers and americans and at one point over breakfast I did overhear an american not too best pleased with the view from thier room. It seems as though a few rooms look straight onto a wall so would stay away from these.

Checking out was no problem however we ordered a taxi through reception for the port but they ended up booking one for the airport!

I would recommend this hotel but definately pay the extra for a room overlooking the plaza as these make more use of the space. Location is key here and you could not be in a better location for getting on and off the tourist bus, walking down the ramblas, and walking in the opposite direction for some great restaurants. We ate a Citrus and would highly recommend.

Room Tip: 100% pay for an upgraded room facing the square

1) They charged my card 984Euros even 2 weeks after I emailed to cancel. - They were supposed to charge after the stay and no charges were supposed to be made if you cancel more than 24 hours before check-in. - I cancelled 3 weeks before check-in. Moreover, when I logged in to their website to check and my reservation was not there.

2) The telephone number on their website is invalid (fake?).

Have emailed them to reverse charges - will update this thread when/if I hear from them.

We did five nights here after a cruise. Location is great. Totally amused by the daily protest marches taking place on the Plaza. I was not amused by my paying extra for a "superior room" only to find out on day three of pounding the pavements, the soaking tub in that superior room gave forth NO HOT WATER. In fact no water at all came from the hot water control knob, only cold from the cold knob. And I was really looking forward to a good soak. Room #510 stay clear. Flooring is rubber carpeting and something was dragged over it making gouges. This was very unsightly. Never did figure out the electrical system. It's either full brights, full dim or totally off for the whole room including the bath area. So every day we played games pushing the switches with varying results. Never could get the bed side lamps on with all other lights off.
Breakfast:: Good coffee, great pastries, cold eggs. Enough said.

I've been to Olivia Plaza Hotel from 11th May to 19th May 2011 by myself, and I highly recommend it because:
Location – close to everything that's important: metro, la Rambla, center of interest for the Barcelona inhabitants, minutes from Barri Gotic, jazz clubs, various shopping and food suggestions, cultural halls and masses of people 24h a day. My room was quiet unless it's a carnivalistic night at the plaza downstairs, as happened on the night of the celebration winning of BCN football team, for example. So if you want to avoid noisy unexpected experiences take another hotel.
Service – willing and smiling staff, gives quick solution to problem (leak at toilet), helps with buying tickets, makes reservations, and explains ways to getting around.
Room – (408 on 4th floor) big even for 2, very nice, with view to plaza Catalunya, very comfortable king-sized bed
Free Wifi – in all hotel, including the rooms, whenever you like (enables skype as well)
Clean – very, both public area and room.
Breakfast – rich, tasty, served in style

Room Tip: get a room with a view to plaza catalunya
