It was interesting for me watching the people in front of the door, saying: "Oh, a synagogue." Taking the photo and then happily continuing their journey... Well, one must go INSIDE to se the synagogue which is of course an archeological site more than a building. Small place with great history.

This was a special stop for me on this trip. Supposedly the oldest synagogue in Europe. For only a couple of Euros you can have a curator explain the story of the synagogue in English. They have some interesting artifacts too. It's subterranean as it had to be lower than the shortest church in the city. Fascinating. Worth it. A little tough to find. Glad I had my iPhone to help me! Did I mention what a neat history it has? AND it was only recently re-discovered!

I was hanging around El Call and found it by chance. I read a little about the area before the trip but this was not mentioned. Small space with great history. Two small rooms, short introduction, you can see the corners and take pictures if you like. Just a small contribution for maintenance charged.

The synagogue has been rediscovered in the 1990s after extensive research. Well worth a short visit whichever faith you belong to. Quite hard to find in the old Call area of the old city. You need to look out for small card notices put up in nearby street. You can see two small rooms , with the two windows facing south east towards Jerusalem. The main synagogue dates from about 300 AD and survived as a place of worship until 1391, when the Inquisition took hold in this part of Catalunya. A small museum . Some of the items have come from an old synagogue in Morocco. In 2003 a couple married in the synagogue ,, the first wedding there for more than 600 years. The 4th century synagogue was built on earlier Roman building dating from the reign Emperor Caracalla in 2nd century. ... some of the Roman remains are visible through the glass floor. .Donations are accepted in lieu of an entrance fee.

At one time there were 4,000 Jews in Barcelona and their story is only just emerging. The foundations of this tiny synagogue date back to the 3rd or 4th century, meaning that this is possibly the oldest known synagogue in Europe. When you visit (make sure you check opening times first) you'll get to hear a little talk about the history and see the original stone work - fascinating.
