“Perfect hotel: great location, great boutique style, great service”
Reviewed 3 September 2009

In the heart of the city. Close to everything. Great boutique style. The Spanish (the Catalonians) have a great sense of style and beauty and it is really captured well is this hotel. Very sexy, Christina Barcelona.

We had a great time in Barcelona and when you go to a city, one aspect that can make your stay perfect perfect is the hotel. This was one of this cases. The staff at the Barcelona Catedral is friendly, always looking to be of help, the breakfast has a great choice and well, the restaurant at night is a blast! Also the rooms are modern, clean and highly comfortable. When things are bad one has to say, when things are great, one has also to say!

We recently stayed at the Bacelona Catedral for 4 nights with our 2 year old son. I had high hopes for this hotel since it was rated #18 on tripadvisor. I have to say I was a little dissapointed. This hotel is four stars but I would say it's closer to three stars. When we arrived (with a young child), we were automatically given a smoking room, we were never asked for our preference. In today's world, a hotel should not presume (and I believe few do) that a person would prefer a smoking room unless otherwise specified. We went right back to reception and asked for a non-smoking room. We were told that the hotel was very full but they would get us a non smoking room. Now, you either have the non smoking room or not. Why the lame excuse? We got to our room and it was really hot inside. The air does not come on unless you are actually IN the room and have the key place inside the holder adjacent to the entrance! It took a few hours to cool the room down but even then, the AC was not very powerful at all. In addition, the hotel is so cheap, as soon as the sun goes down, they turn off the AC in the lobby and general hotel areas. When you arrive back from dinner to your hotel, be prepared to be just as hot inside as it was outside. A couple of more odd things. The room did not come with a "do not disturb" sign. We called the front desk and a security guard (?) brought us a sign. The following morning we left the room as kept the do not distrub sign up as we did not want housekeeping to come into our room. They came in anyway and they removed the extra key from the slot that powers the room so we once again arrived in a hot room and waited a few hours for it to cool down. We advised the front desk of this and hoped for better the following day but yet again, same scenario. The final blow was the day we checked out. We packed up our stuff walked to the elevator and waited, and waited for the elevator to come. Mind you, it was early and the AC was not really running in the hallways yet and we just stood there sweating. My husband finally walked down the stairs to see what was going on. We were advised that the elevator was broken. I understand that this happens, but a sign advising guest of this and a little help down the stairs with your bags would have been nice.

Now, what I did like about the hotel was the location. It is centrally located yet it is very quiet. Since we traveled with our toddler, it was also nice to have a hot water boiler in the room. The rooms were clean and the staff were pleasant enough. If this hotel was selling rooms for 80 Euro's a night, I may have been able to deal with these mishaps, but when I'm paying 130 Euro's a night, I expect more.

We really wanted to stay at this hotel because of the great reviews. We couldn't get a room on our own but a major credit card's company travel agency booked it for us. We got there and the hotel's look met my expectations. We try to check in with our four year old and baby. We are told that we can't stay there b/c we didn't book our children (the travel agency had told us that we did). Then, we were told that we could stay there for an extra $75 a night (eventually the credit card company negotiated it down to $35). At this point, it was an hour after we arrived. I went around the corner and found a charming hotel (Hotel Colon) who said not a problem with our children. We would have stayed there our entire visit, but we wanted a pool for our son. So, we moved to Grand Hotel Central (not as good reviews on tripadvisor which I don't understand because they were incredibly accomodating, less expensive for the same amentities).

Dear Mr. Singerman,

Thank you for your comments, but we would like to clarify that:

We do have at your disposal the travel agency reservation where is very clearly detailed that we should book a double room. In any case, a child or even your baby was mentioned.

Our receptionist was the person that proposed you a special discount rate for your child (babies are free) since he was willing to minimise the inconveniences for the confusion.

We are always pleased to receive critics in order to improve our service, but in this case, we really propose that you check the reservation done by your Travel agency. If you would like to have a copy of it please let us know.

In any case, it is a pity that you had a trip with inconveniences, does not matter who generated them. We always look for traveller satisfaction when anyone decides to visit our town.

Best regards from Barcelona

We choose the Barcelona Catedral given its superb location, just steps from the Cathedral and nearby 4 metro stops. Our surprise was upon arrival, the hotel is central but in an ultra quiet street, couldn’t think of a better location! The staff is very friendly and attentive, upon arrival our check in was pre-prepared so that they spent their time giving recommendations on what to do, where to go, etc.

The room was great, with a fresh and modern décor, a great bed and absolutely soundproof. The bathroom is equipped with a fabulous shower.

The hotel has an interior terrace with a lounge, the ideal place to have a drink after a long day, however I highly recommend the rooftop pool, a real oasis after a hot day from where to enjoy Barcelona’s sunset

Breakfast is a must, I recommend the Catalan menu.

I wish there was a hotel like this one in every city!

Overall, this hotel is modern, clean, and hip. My wife and I stayed at this hotel for a few nights during June of 2009. The rooms were refreshingly large, roomy, and clean. The pool on the roof top was pretty sizable compared to other hotels in Barcelona. The lobby was cool and retro and there were plenty of working computer terminals available to check email and browse the web. Alex at the front desk was extemely helpful with finding a great place to eat. The location of this hotel is both great and horrible at the same time. The location is great because it is located right in the heart of the gothic district which means you can easily walk to great restaurants like The Four Cats, and Caracoles, and great museums like the Picasso museum. However, the hotel location is bad for two reasons. It is very difficult to find even for the taxi drivers for one. And second, the Gothic district is the pick-pocketers headquarters so you must be on alert as soon as you leave the property which is very tiring. Be sure to wear your backpack on your front and carry as little of value as possible while exploring the Gothic district. It is full of punks who work in groups to pickpocket travelers. The use their cell phones and are very coordinated. Be very careful! I mean it!

Three computers in the lobby are free. Fast connection, nice computers, but mostly busy. wifi costs 15 euros a day.

The hotel is great otherwise. Nice location, nice rooms, nice pool but cold.

Dear Mr. Motulsky,

Thank you very much for your positive comments, such as “a great stay, nice location. Great staff, great hotel”.

Your point regarding that it is not clear enough that internet is free in the business centre but that there is a 10,70 € charge for 24 hours WIFI service, has been a good contribution for improvement, and therefore we do have already changed the text in our website.

Once again, thank you for your time and contribution. Keep on participating and travelling!!!

Best regards from Barcelona.
