“Clean Facilities, unfriendly host”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 June 2012

We recently stayed at Ally's Guest House II and were sorely disappointed. Having read the stellar reviews on TripAdvisor, we thought we had made a good choice for our accommodations. Although the place is kept very clean and the breakfast is ample, the beds are pretty uncomfortable and the room we stayed in had an air conditioner that sounded like a jet was going off, making a good night's sleep impossible. Aside from that, the rooms don't really filter out outside noise, so we heard every conversation other guests were having in the kitchen/hallway. All of this would have been tolerable had it not been for the unfriendly host Rosa. Rather than making us feel welcome, we had a constant sense of being a nuisance in her home (she lives there). The Wifi didn't work the entire time we were there, and Rosa was on the computer half the time we were in the apartment. Overall, I would not recommend staying here. Judging from the other reviewers, it seems as though we were not the only travelers with this experience.

A friend and I stayed in Ally's Guesthouse II for 2 nights then were moved to Ally's Guesthouse III for five nights. Each guest house is looked after and lived in by a host (Guesthouse II by Rosa and Guesthouse III - Veronica). Due to a change of plans in our travels we were accommodated for the 1st two nights at the last minute, quite late at night, which we appreciated.

The place is very clean and the shared bathrooms are not a problem. Our stay in Guesthouse II was lovely, the room was huge and full of light, with tiled floors, high ceilings and a balcony. The bathrooms and dining areas were also great, newly renovated and airy.

When we were moved into Guesthouse III, where our booking was made initially - the situation changed. We were given a similarly clean and neat room - however, it barely fit two single beds and the only window faced a patio, so no natural light or fresh air could get in (only the smell of cigarette smoke from below).

We wouldn't have minded this, if we weren't somewhat put off by the attitude of the host, Veronica. Veronica made us feel like we were imposing and generally unwelcome. Perhaps it was because we had arrived at Ally's II late at night, disturbing the other caretaker Rosa and word traveled to Veronica, as we also got the cold shoulder from Rosa...? Veronica was seemingly friendly to other guests, making suggestions about restaurants, etc. - however, it was clear she was very happy to see us leave. At one stage she yelled at us in Spanish, knowing that we only knew the basics, demanding payment the day before we left. I had already paid half the bill and explained that my friend had the cash on her but there wasn't a time when both of them had been in the building together to settle the account. There were other minor instances such as me taking a banana to put in my bag just as breakfast was getting packed away and getting a seemingly nasty glance for doing so. It's hard to put all this into words, but overall the vibe we got from our hots was off putting.

All in all, Ally's is a great place to stay if you happen to fall into the good graces of the host...as far as facilities go, we cannot fault it - but the attitude can be very off-putting and ultimately makes us reluctant to recommend this guesthouse.

We stayed in Ally's #1 (there are three locations) for 4 days during a week long trip to Spain. Rooms (including the shared bathrooms) were very clean, and our host Graciela indulged our mediocre castellano and helped us get oriented very quickly. Ally's is located on the border of the Eixample and Gracia and very close to a metro station, so it was a good launching point for exploring the city. Breakfast was included with our stay and more than your standard continental -- we had our choice of teas, coffee, breads, cheeses, meats, eggs, yogurt and fruit -- more than enough to fill you up for a few hours.

My husband and I stayed at Ally's Guest House in mid-May 2012. We just loved it there. It was very clean, had modern decor, the king size bed was comfy, and the breakfast was awesome! Normally at a B&B you get some toast, muffins, coffee and juice for breakfast but this place offered way more! We woke up to find a big spread of food in the morning such as muffins, pasteries, different types of cereal, granola, assorted types of yogurt, a beautiful fruit plate, toast, jams, juices, coffee, tea, milk, hard boiled eggs, sliced deli meats etc. The list could go on! Our host was so friendly and was there to answer any of our questions.
I would highly recommend this place!
Oh, and even though there are 6 rooms and only 3 full bathrooms, it doesn't even seem like it! My husband and I were worried about the bathrooms always being full but we found that during our entire stay at least one or two of the bathrooms were always free.

Room Tip: There are 3 Ally Guest Houses run by the same people. We stayed at Ally's Guest House III and s...

From the moment we were met at the airport by the transfer service that Ally's had arranged for us, to the moment we left, our stay at Ally's made a great contribution to making our trip to Barcelona relaxed and hassle-free. A great benefit for us was that it had a generously sized quadruple bedded room, which is a rare find.

Thanks.

We spend 3 days at Ally's Guest House II in May and had a great time! The room and the facilities (especially to bathrooms) were sparcling clean, our host was very welcoming always ready to give us information and the breakfast was very good with a large choice of food and drinks! The guest house is well situated very close from the Sagrada Familia and a very short walk from the metro Verdaguer! We had a very good time and would recommand this place to anyone!

Room Tip: It may be a good idea to ask for a quiet room that does not give on the street

My husband and I stayed in Ally's Guesthouse III for 5nights. It was our first time sharing a bathroom while traveling (only other time while living in dorms during college) and must say it was a great experience. The entire place was very clean, the dining room was wonderful- light, clean, tea/coffee provided all day, breakfast was great and healthy: boiled eggs, yogurt, fruit, cereals, granola, raisins, etc.

My husband and I (mid 20s) had the cheapest room available which was perfect for us as Barcelona is quite expensive and we were looking for a nice, clean place within this price range. Just a note: the room has virtually no windows. The one small window that it does have lets very little light in, and if opened faces some pipes and has a musty smell, so we pretty much had it closed the whole time. I LOVE natural light and generally try to find rooms that have great light. However, for this price I was very pleased with this room, the great location of the guesthouse (minutes from Sagrada Familia, and short walk from Passage de Gracia and the great sightseeing of Barcelona), Veronica's hospitality and am still giving it 5stars.

Enjoy your stay!!!
