Hostal Baires is great value for money as long as you know what you are letting yourself in for. Communal toilet, no tv, basic breakfast, noisy environment etc. Being in the gothic quarter of barcelona for £50 a night between two of you kind of cancels out any minor problems in my opinion, the staff are friendly and helpful and cover the front desk from early in the morning to midnight, there is internet access for a Euro for half an hour in the dining area, there is a machine that sells soft drinks and water and BEER for a Euro, which was an added bonus. Calle Avinyo is lively, full of bars, cafes, and shops so bring ear plugs if you want an early night, and be careful if you are walking to La Rambla nearby in the dark, as there are one or two suspicious characters around, as long as you keep your wits about you, you will be fine however. My girlfriend and I took one look at the breakfast and decided against it, but it may be to others taste and there was tea, coffee and juice if nothing else takes your fancy. Would return but for no more than 2 nights, that is not to say that others may not want to, just our personal taste.

The location of this hostel couldn't have been better. Right on a main vein inside the Barrio Gotic, easy to navigate to, close walking distance to the beach and just a few twists and turns to La Rambla or in the other direction, the 'Born neighbourhood' and about 10 mins up to Plaza Catalunya. It was basic, however the price was really a steal to have a private double room in that location, and the place was clean during our stay. Breakfast was included, basic and of course a bit lame, but what hostel breakfast isn't? Wash down a cup of joe with a few muffins and head to the La Boqueria Mercado de San Jose to get the good stuff! Around the corner on the next street is Green Bikes, they have the cheapest rental, 10€ for the whole day! And if you're tired of all that jamon and need a good vegetarian meal, Vegetalia cafe is the next street up on the left.

Room Tip: Balcony rooms are fun but bring your earplugs!

I went to Barcelona with a friend in May 2011 to attend Primavera Live Festival. We found this hostel and we thought the location was great and the price too. The location is indeed great, but everything else sucks: the rooms are renewed but still kind of old. Our was stinky. Breakfast was actuallt ok for the price we paid. The man at the reception during the night hours was pretty unfriendly, but Miguel, the one during the day, was really nice. Bathroom are new and decent. Bedsheets were clean.

We stayed here for 4 days and expected it to be basic going on the reviews. We decided to go ahead with the booking as we were visiting Barca with friends and figured we only needed a bed. These were our main observations good and bad:
*We had a room without a bathroom but did have a sink, the tap did not work and although we asked for it to be looked at and fixed we never had running water which was frustrating as the bathrooms were also not great.
*The shelves in wardrobe were broken.
*The blinds were broken so getting light in the room was minimal as they would only go up halfway.
*Of two bedside lights one was broken and would not work.
*In all the shared bathrooms the shower holder was broken so you had to hold the shower head.
*Generally the rooms were really shabby and some of the blankets had burn holes in. *Towels were supposedly changed every 2nd day although ours were the same for 4 days.
*Be warned walls are very, very thin! Take earplugs if you are a light sleeper.
On the positive it was cheap - although our friends were staying 30 secs down the road and their accommodation was fantastic and not much more per person.
The location is second to none, in the heart of Gotic and close to the beach. There are however plenty of hostels also in the same area. The staff were friendly enough - but never fixed our tap!

ok, the room was small but if i stay in a city for vacation the most import thing is for me the location of the place where i stay ! and the hostal baires is just located perfect because many of the important spots of barcelona are just a short walk away. 10 minutes to the beach, 5 minutes to the harbour with it's nice sailboats (great for a romantic walk at night), 5 minutes to the "ramblas", 10 minutes to the picasso museum and so on. just perfect to discover barcelona !
also there's a lot of cafes and restaurants like one of the best ones in barcelona with typical catalan food which is located just in front of the hostel. it is called pitarra and the food is great ! in 1 week we have been there 3 times :-) it's not a cheap restaurant but as we didn't had to spent a lot of money in the hostel we could enjoy that great restaurant. the wifi connection is free in the hostel and so we could made the plans for the next day with my iphone laying on the bed. so my result for the hostal baires is good ! perfect location at a very fair price.

I visited great Barcelona for a Camp Nou trip:) As a single traveller.

Hostal was extremaly cheap. I had room without bathroom, which I orderd. Room was simple, but clean, towels included. Bathroom ok, first day water was a little too cold, 2nd day ok. You can leave You lagguage and pick it up later, after cheek out.

Little hard to find, street in the night it's not really nice for a signle person walking :)

But so far, for this money, it's ok.

Recomended for students/ people, who want to save money!

We stayed for three nights at Hostal Baires on a team event. Afterwards, I could only possibly imagine this hostel as suitable for students or very low-budget travelers who are willing to put up with a lot of noise at an old, unkempt hostel.

The bad:
Very misleading website (hostelbaires.com). Take what you expect from the pictures and cut that expectation in half. And now cut it in half again. The pictures show a bright and natural, if simple hostel with a touch of charm. In reality it is dingy, run-down, and lacking any feeling of coziness. We were a party of 12, occupying a total of 7 single and double rooms, and none of us saw anything that resembled the pictures on the website whatsoever.

Extremely noisy. Although our room and bed seemed clean (thankfully no evidence of the creepy-crawlies mentioned in other reviews), the old balcony door was askew and would only latch at the bottom. All of the street revelry in this popular area accompanies you in your room the whole night through. There are bars directly under the hostel and across the two bordering streets. A friend gave me a spare set of earplugs the second night, which saved my stay - without them I would have been miserable and without sleep for my visit. Our balcony was small, dirty and useless. If you have a chance, get a room that is *not* on the exterior of the hostel as the noise level is significantly lower on the back and in the interior courtyard.

Bathrooms and toilets border on uncleanliness. Although the fixtures (toilets, sinks, bath/shower) were clean, the floor and corners are dingy. Overall impression when using the facilities is "touch as little as possible". Again, forget the pictures on the website. Just forget them.

Bring-your-own-basics. There is no soap, shampoo, or face cloth provided. Along with the room, you get a single bath towel only. Come prepared. Bath shoes are also a good idea.

Difficult to find the first time. The entrance shot on the website shows a friendly entrance with lots of plants. This entrance is really in a dingy courtyard with poor lighting and no more plants. On the street is simply a large wood door with an inset portal and the buzzer for the hostel (see picture). It can be easy to miss.

The good:
It's cheap, but you get what you pay for.

OK location. This is a "colorful" part of town. You need to watch out a bit at night, but there are a ton of great little bars, restaurants, and tapas bars around. We ended up hanging out in the area most evenings, but were glad to do it in groups.

Summary:
Earplugs saved my trip to Barcelona. I love this city and will definitely return, but definitely not to Hostel Baires.
