Description: Opening its doors in 1836 to begin offering over 150 years of excellence, Restaurant de les 7 Portes is truly the most classic of Barcelona's eating places. Here, you can enjoy the finest Catalan cooking in an intimate setting or in one of the spacious banquet halls, accompanied by Spain's best wines and "cavas" (sparkling wines) from the well-stocked cellar. The restaurant is housed in the Pòrtics d'en Xifré, a building declared a national monument and the first place in Barcelona where running water was installed. In 1942, it became the property of Paco Parellada, founder of one of the foremost dynasties of restaurateurs in all of Catalonia.

“Nice setting, great service, lovely food”
Reviewed 29 May 2014

We arrived a little after 7 so there were only a few people there, so we seated and a waiter was there telling us what to eat. He obviously knew we were first timers. We were talked into ordering more than what we thought we needed. A richmans paella for 1 was enough for 2 if you order an entree and have desert. Anyway the meal was great, we ordered too much food and eat too much. We spent more than double or treble what we normally spend for dinner, but it was nice. Beer and wine was expensive by our standards. Once was enough though for me.

“Memorable service, very good food”
Reviewed 28 May 2014

A very traditional restaurant with terrific service. One of us tipped his glass of wine on the ham while passing the just served plate of Iberian ham. The waiter took the plate of ham away-put it on the serving area- and brought out a new serving! Yummy toast with fresh tomato for the ham.
We had a 1/2 bottle of house red and towards the end of our wine the waitress poured a bit more into our glasses from another bottle. Seafood paella was very good and a serving for two was sufficient for three; sea bass was delicious; delicious sauteed spinach and pine nuts, nice fresh salad; and creamy cake roll for dessert.

“Pity - the restaurant let itself down”
Reviewed 28 May 2014

This was our 3rd or 4th visit to this iconic Barcelona eatery. With its panelled walls and tables labelled for the dignitaries and celebrities who have dined there, we normally ensure it is on our list for every visit to Barcelona. This time, however, it failed to live up to its reputation. Dishes that they are known for (and which I looked forward to) were unavailable; their roast lamb with roasted potatoes is legendary, but that night there were no roasted potatoes. I was offered French fries!! and when I refused I was offered boiled potatoes (potatoes which could have been roasted!) My wife had to return her main course as it was cold. I hope this was just an off night and the restaurant isn't becoming complacent.

“We love it!”
Reviewed 27 May 2014 via mobile

We had oysters that tasted so fresh with the right balance of crunch and creaminess. The mussels were heavenly! Another favourite is the sea bass - crisped skin and moist flakes...mm... The rich man's paella was a tad salty for me but still delicious with a thick flavoursome coat of broth. Quality food, whether touristy or not. We were there at 8pm without reservations and waited 10 minutes for a table. The restaurant filled up quickly and by the time we left at 9pm, there was a crowd waiting outside.

“Great paella”
Reviewed 27 May 2014

This is not a cheapie, but the food is worth it. We had varied entrees - mussels, scallops, croquettes - all good and a good size. Then shared a rich man's paella which was fantastic. Wine not overpriced. It worked out around 70 Euro per couple, but we all thought it worth the cost.
