Description: Opening its doors in 1836 to begin offering over 150 years of excellence, Restaurant de les 7 Portes is truly the most classic of Barcelona's eating places. Here, you can enjoy the finest Catalan cooking in an intimate setting or in one of the spacious banquet halls, accompanied by Spain's best wines and "cavas" (sparkling wines) from the well-stocked cellar. The restaurant is housed in the Pòrtics d'en Xifré, a building declared a national monument and the first place in Barcelona where running water was installed. In 1942, it became the property of Paco Parellada, founder of one of the foremost dynasties of restaurateurs in all of Catalonia.

“Charming old-school restaurant”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 June 2014

You would think that having been in business since 1836, they would have figured out how to manage an excellent restaurant, and you would be right.

Plenty of tourists, but they still have a regular local clientele. Without a reservation, we had to wait under the arcade, but it was well worth it. From the linen tablecloths and napkins embroidered with the insignia of the restaurant, to the the old style flatware and the attentive, professional service, this is a well-run place.

The Catalan cuisine is excellent - spicy and hearty, prepared according to recipes that must be substantially the same as when the doors first opened.

This is a traditional favorite near the old port - but for good reason.

“Best paella ever!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 June 2014 via mobile

The service was wonderful, we went for lunch and no reservation was needed. Reservations is adviseable for dinner. We had anchovies as entree, paella for main course and crema catalana for dessert. We ended up buying their book!

“Old world style”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 June 2014

This is a traditional, elegant restaurant which dates from 1881. It is popular among locals and tourists alike for its 19th century look and feel, for efficient and unobtrusive service and for well-prepared, simple food. Don’t come here If you are looking for some type of 21st century fusion cuisine with fancy-design plate presentation. Do come here if you seek Spanish fare that is tasty and served in hearty portions. We started with a vegetable platter and a plate of steamed spinach baked with pine nuts and raisins. Unadorned but wonderful. For the main course we had a lamb stew and cod prepared with chick peas and spinach. Delicious. The wine list is long and has many well-priced regional wines. We did not have reservations and arrived 30 minutes before opening time on Easter Monday. We were seated immediately. Apparently they take only a few reservations so you can be seated but wait times on holidays and Sundays can be very long.

“Beautiful, old restaurant in Barcelona”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 June 2014

We dined at 7 Portes on a Sunday night. I booked a table for 9pm - thank goodness I did as the queue was at least 20 deep outside when we got there. What a lovely restaurant - feels like you have stepped back in time.

The portions are enormous! We shared a goats cheese salad & then followed with dover sole. Our lovely waitress brought it to the table - what a fish, it was enormous, and expertly filleted it in front of us. It was possibly the best bit of dover sole I have ever eaten - cooked to perfection.

I highly recommend a trip to 7 Portes whilst in Barcelona. It's not a cheap option, but it's definitely worthwhile. Great wine list.
