Description: Opening its doors in 1836 to begin offering over 150 years of excellence, Restaurant de les 7 Portes is truly the most classic of Barcelona's eating places. Here, you can enjoy the finest Catalan cooking in an intimate setting or in one of the spacious banquet halls, accompanied by Spain's best wines and "cavas" (sparkling wines) from the well-stocked cellar. The restaurant is housed in the Pòrtics d'en Xifré, a building declared a national monument and the first place in Barcelona where running water was installed. In 1942, it became the property of Paco Parellada, founder of one of the foremost dynasties of restaurateurs in all of Catalonia.

“Very good paella!”
Reviewed 7 June 2014

This famous and old restaurant serves very good food. The paella was delicious. The service was excellent. On every seat there is a small sign with the name of a famous person who sat there once... nice!

“Highly Overrated”
Reviewed 7 June 2014

This was our third trip back to the restaurant and will be our last. We were always so impressed by great service, excellent food and just the experience of dining there. On our recent trip, that was not the case. Although our waiter didn't seem busy, he didn't seem attentive or interested either. We had to ask other staff members to find him several times during our meal. He was not at all friendly and our food was served at odd times. We had stopped by a small restaurant in a plaza by our hotel and had some great paella the day before and it was honestly much better than what we were served there. All in all, we felt like they were living off of their long standing reputation and NOT their current standard of food and service. Overrated and over priced!

“Old Style with something else!”
Reviewed 6 June 2014

Very nice ambience and decor, if you like traditional style, the food was good but a bit on the higher cost to value ratio but crtainly worth a visit.

The fish platter was a good size, ideal variety and well tasty!

The lamb, if you are a meat eater, was very nice, tender and juicy, well cooked indeed!

“Charming old-school restaurant”
Reviewed 5 June 2014

You would think that having been in business since 1836, they would have figured out how to manage an excellent restaurant, and you would be right.

Plenty of tourists, but they still have a regular local clientele. Without a reservation, we had to wait under the arcade, but it was well worth it. From the linen tablecloths and napkins embroidered with the insignia of the restaurant, to the the old style flatware and the attentive, professional service, this is a well-run place.

The Catalan cuisine is excellent - spicy and hearty, prepared according to recipes that must be substantially the same as when the doors first opened.

This is a traditional favorite near the old port - but for good reason.
