Description: Opening its doors in 1836 to begin offering over 150 years of excellence, Restaurant de les 7 Portes is truly the most classic of Barcelona's eating places. Here, you can enjoy the finest Catalan cooking in an intimate setting or in one of the spacious banquet halls, accompanied by Spain's best wines and "cavas" (sparkling wines) from the well-stocked cellar. The restaurant is housed in the Pòrtics d'en Xifré, a building declared a national monument and the first place in Barcelona where running water was installed. In 1942, it became the property of Paco Parellada, founder of one of the foremost dynasties of restaurateurs in all of Catalonia.

This restaurant is a traditional and must-visit institution in Barcelona. I advise reservations ~ both kinds: Plan ahead and pick your dishes carefully. We had several dishes. Those that were excellent were the specials of the day, particularly seafood plates. But we were very disappointed in the famous "Rich Man's Paella" which I termed "Poor man's Leftovers." The rice was dry, under seasoned, sticky and tasteless. The seafood was sparse, stale and dry. The sausage textured like sawdust. It was the worst dish I ate in a week in Barcelona ~ and the fresh fish were among the best. I suspect the Paella was at least a day old.
The restaurant is large, picturesque, an excellent wine list with lively, professional and well managed staff. These folks know how to run a large establishment. Well done!

I read amazing things about this restaurant, went there for a dinner after a lovely day in Barceloneta and was surprised at how awful my experience turned out to be:

1- the waiters are very snobbish, cold, uninterested, and not helpful.

2- the bread was hard and cold as brick.

3- the catalan style bread with tomato wasn't that good.

4- our main course: rich man's Paella was very salty and lacked any interesting flavors beside the salt.

Save your time, go to Elche (a little close to Las ramblas).

The food was mediocre and burnt, the staff quite unfriendly and moreover not honest (they actually tried to make us pay a basket of bread that we did not even touch for the impressive amount of 14,40€ !!). This place is completely overrated, I have travelled a lot and visited many restaurants and I really do not understand why people want to go here so badly. I strongly recommend you to go elsewhere!

The only restaurant in Barcelona with excellent food, welcoming professional service and an atmosphere that brings you back to the times of Modernism. It is authentic. I was there with my partner and we had the most enjoyable, relaxed time. True Barcelona spirit, with continuity between past and future. Food is just excellent quality. Waiting outside with a view to Pla de Palau is already a pleasure.
