I've made several trips to Barcelona in the past few years, and tried this small restaurant for the first time a couple of years ago on the advice of a hotel clerk nearby. The food is simply prepared but generally very tasty (and good-sized portions too). It's close to the Hotel Peninsular just off c/Sant Pau, as you walk toward las Ramblas. It can be crowded at times, but there's usually room at the counter (if you're alone).

The restaurant is actually just off St. Paul so you have to keep your eyes open when looking for #28. This is a neighborhood establishment that is also happy to serve tourists. Everything is well priced and plentiful. It is very plain in dcor but the heartiness of the food more than makes up for it. Good, simple country cooking, inexpensive wine and beer and fun to watch and listen toall that is going on around you. The grilled salmon is excellent. If the pork joint is being served, try it....deliciously slow roasted and then grilled with cartelized onions. Well worth the effort.

Try the peas and jamon. Merluza and chips and roast chicken. Simple food but tasty and filling. A great local Spanish experience.

My husband, 11 year old son and I stayed in a newly renovated hotel (Hotel Espana) literally 20 steps from this tiny restaurant. We stumbled upon it one night at the beginning of our trip while we were looking for a quick, inexpensive bite to eat.

We were so impressed by the authentic Catalan cuisine that we returned each day or night for a full meal or snack. And pitcher of the best sangria we have EVER had. To watch the men make it is fascinating. It contains at least 8 different ingredients. Not just juice and wine. The final result is potent and very delicious.

You can either sit at the bar or at a table in the back of the restaurant. It is by no means fancy. The 4 men that were there running the place each time we went were friendly, especially to our son, and were good sports about listening to our meager Spanish.

The restaurant is 30 paces, or so, from La Boqueria, so I can only imagine that access to the freshest of ingredients helps make their food so delicious.

We went to this place because of the great reviews in TA and I have to say we were a bit disappointed. We sat at the bar and so we were able to see who they were cooking the meals. Most of them were pre-prepared and microwaved for the customer. If you want to try this place, order all the food that are grilled. It seems like it's the best way to get fresh cooked meals.

I have to say it was really cheap though.
