Description: A piece of the Basque Country in the middle of Barcelona downtown. Txapela is an authentic "euskal taberna" where our bars are full of PINTXOS, elaborated with the best ingredients with Protected Designation of Origin. And what a better pairing than a good glass of Txakoli, a Txikito of Basque Cider, while enjoying a sunbath in our terrace!

This is the first tapas bar I tried in Barcelona, hungry and jet lagged after an over night flight from the US. A fellow patron at the bar explained to me that the tapas served here are in the Basque tradition. At any rate , three tapas I tried, all served on olive infused toast, very fair to excellent. The San Fermin, fried chicken and green sweet pepper, just fair, nothing special. The jamon one was good, but a bit salty, while the gamba, mushroom and jamon was excellent. The house wine, a simple Spanish white was also good. I found the service to be quick and friendly, unlike what other writers had reported here, and the price for seven tapas plus three glasses of house wine reasonable at 13 euros. I would go back.

furst i'd like to address what someone else wrote. this place doesn't serve tapas, it serves pintchos. which i believe means small tapas. the place serves single bite dishes.
while this seems small, it allows you to sanple many different spanish dishes at a reasonable price, which i thought was great.
when eating around barcelona i always saw things i wanted to eat but seemed expensive fir a comparatively high price. here it was more like eating sushi. you pick the things you want to eat from a menu with pictures and have fun with it.
i came out very happy with the meal, eating shrimp, beef, and vegi dishes.
i highly recommend it for someone who wants to try stuff out.

All the food was great and never felt rushed to move from the bar where the food is being prepared in front of you

A nice place at the corner of Plaça Catalunya! The Tapas are typically Basque. You can choose them either directly from the bar or via the menu card (about 50 different types of Tapas, one half served cold, one half served warm). The menu card is translated into several different languages, which is a great plus: you can get exactly what you're wishing for.

Usually the Baguette should be crunchy on the surface but have a soft inner part. Here it was sometimes so hard that you could barely cut the Tapas into pieces without destroying the whole arrangement.

We ordered water with gas to the Tapas. Unfortunately, the water was very salty so we couldn't enjoy drinking it. We exchanged our water for some other drinks and didn't need to pay for our water. That was a really nice gesture!

We were enticed to eat at this restaurant after a great experience the night before at another tapas joint. Walking home, we noticed the sign and the crowd and decided to give La Txapela a go. We wish we had not. These are not true tapas but, rather, are single bites on pieces of bread. Truth be told, most seemed to be canned food dumped on a piece of toast. The cold, fish-based bites were so poor and overwhelmingly fishy tasting that we could not finish them, our stomachs churning after a single bite. For 56 euros, continued hunger, and ill-feeling stomachs we were highly disappointed and cannot recommend this restaurant.

On a positive note, the service was fabulous.
