This is an extension location of the Hotel Historic, unstaffed, you have to go to the Historic for services or call, but this is no problem. Old and elegantly restored, quiet, except for the church bells which you will either hate of love for the charm. In the heart of the old city, but just a short walk away from the plaza and Ramblas, and all that is happening. Only complaint, no coffee or breakfast offered. Xavier is very helpful. Bike Breaks is steps away. Good value for the money. We loved it.

Room Tip: Room 104...not a great view but very comfy.

We took a while to write this since it required a degree of effort to get it right. We estimate that over the last 13 years, we have stayed in 79 different accommodations, in 59 different cities, in 13 countries in Europe. We have discussed it, and we would rank this #1 on that list, not simply in terms of value for money (which, at 80E per night, is almost absurd value for what you get), but on overall quality. First of all, let’s get the disclaimers out of the way. Our flat was up three flights of stone stairs in a building that fronts onto a sloping cobblestoned street, and we could hear noisy neighbors down the hall one evening. Also, Girona is a hilly town where mountain goat skills are useful to get around, plus to get to your accommodation you have to check in at the Hotel Historic up the street.
That said, here was our experience: We arrived at the hotel and were greeted by Xavier, head honcho for this family-run operation – young, personable, perfect English, good sense of humor. We said we are checking into Casa Cundaro #204 and he says “Great. I just finished it last week! Oh, here’s my Mom.” Mom smiles at us, grabs most our luggage and begins trotting out the door and downhill down the street encouraging us to follow. We keep up, follow her up the stairs and through the door. She drops our bags, smiles and says something equivalent to “Beautiful, no?” Our first thought was that we couldn’t begin to estimate what this apartment would cost to buy in the New York City area. Living room: high, wood beamed ceilings, stone walls, fitted with top quality sofa-bed, chairs and table. Kitchen/Dining Area: Fully fitted, all utensils, great table and chairs. Master bedroom: Queen size bed, plenty of storage, sliding door for privacy. Second bedroom: two twin beds, skylight in the ceiling with view of cathedral, large solid door that separates the room for the rest of the apartment. We both started feeling foolish for not have asked others to join us! The bathroom was spacious and modern .
Once Mom left we plopped down on the sofa and felt as though we had bought a new home.
Over three days we found Girona to be a wonderful town with fine historic sites, almost no foreign tourists and great restaurants. We had originally intended to visit Figueres and Cascais for Dali , but we decided Girona was to cool to abandon. Stranger to say we always advocate that accommodation doesn’t matter that much; that the object of travel is to get out and see what you came to see. But, for the first time in our travels, we were hard-pressed to leave the apartment because being there was so totally rewarding.
Good luck to Xavier and his family. We can’t wait to come back!

I booked this place after reviewing several from trip advisor. I was looking for a place with character, atmosphere, clean, spacious and affordable. Casa cundaro has ticked all the boxes.

It was difficult to locate the place in the dark as most Spanish towns are massive, and Girona particularly can be difficult to know where you are! There are several exits from the highway, and many long roads after that. The old town, where the apartment hotel is located has very narrow streets, and it was made more difficult with what seemed like 'no entry' signs erected on these narrow streets which in fact we can enter! The landmark for Casa cundaro is in fact the University (not the cathedral).

We parked the car at the car park at the University, and walked up cobbled streets to the reception of Casa Cundaro, which is the Historic Hotel, the parent hotel. Xavier greeted and welcomed us to Girona, and gave us the parking label (for free parking), and got our luggage form the car. He even helped my mother in law with her rather heavy bag. He provided pointers for restaurants with local flavours: the first shop round the corner from where Casa Cundaro is, Divinum (greatest tapas we ever had!), and other restaurants a few blocks away from the tourists spot. He also provided us some challenge for us about the church bells and also got us intrigued about the history of Casa Cundaro.

The apartment-hotel was full of character, from the doors, floors, steps, and balconies. Very tastefully decorated. The apartment we inhabited was 204 (which had 2 rooms), and it was warm, clean, comfortable, and well lit. We could not hear a lot of the bells on the first night, but there were more bells on a Sunday morning. Very atmospheric.

According to Xavier, we were the first to see the newly renovated room - the one with the twin beds, as it had a window on the ceiling, where you get a great view of the cathedral tower. Our room, with double bed, has lovely french doors - very romantic indeed. The kitchen was adequately equipped and contrary to some reviews, the place was so warmly heated.

There is internet connection but you need to get it going first by going to the middle floor, where the lounge is.

All in all, a great find. I have no hesitation in recommending anyone to stay at Casa Cundaro. Girona is a great place to visit, and you can drive to various places such as , Banyoles, Castellfolit de la Roc, Besalu, Ripoll, Santa Pau, and Figueres if you wanted to). It is hard to find a place with such great value, history and superb Girona hospitality.

If you wish to contact for more tips, you are most welcome.

Casa Cundaro has a handful of tastefully and very recently restored rooms in a centuries-old Jewish home a stone's throw from the cathedral. We stayed in Room 104, with the luxury of a huge bathroom. The house is the latest project of Xavi and his family who also run Hotel Historic round the corner, where you can get breakfast for a very reasonable 7 euros. Friendly, down to earth service and the chance to experience a little bit of historic Girona for yourself. I'm sure there are cheaper places to stay, but this was unique. Don't forget to ask Xavi if you're interested in the house's history - you'll be amazed by the stories that will pour forth!
