A castle, transformed into a cathedral and then for centuries into an army quarter and now being recuperated. Do take a guide available at the premises otherwise you shall miss a lot of details

Well it is Spain so it may not be surprising to know that the Cathedral interior is closed most of the afternoon! Nonetheless the view over the city and its surrounds from the area around the Cathedral are still worth it.

The Seu Vella really is the identifying icon of the city of Lleida and can be seen from many points around the city.
Reflecting the changing fortunes of the city throughout history it was consecrated as a cathedral after the reconquest. The remains of the Moorish fortress "La Suda" can now also be seen at the same sight. It was later de-consecrated at the end of the Spanish war of succession as a punishment for having sided with the Hapsburgs. This explains its austere appearance as all the religious artefacts and decorations were stripped out. Later it saw life as a barracks and a nunnery (though not at the same time).
Today it makes for an atmospheric visit with great views and two stand out features: the view from the top of the tower (which is quite a climb) and the unique cloister which is open on one side and offers a spectacular vista.
Well worth taking a guided visit if you can to get a sense of the history,

Thank nigel b

This old cathedral and castle is well worth a visit. However, if you are physically challenged in any way, do not attempt the climb up all the steps! There is a car park and an easier ascent!
The cathedral is beautiful and peaceful, especially the cloister. We spent quite some time here, just wandering around, enjoying the calm and quiet of the place.
There is a small gift shop, toilets and a bar. There are amazing views of Lleida from all around.
