Riding up by cog railway -- or viewed from above from the funicular, the Monastery is magnificent. And don't miss the heavenly midday boys choir.

What is not to like about this lofty establishment? Steeped in tradition and history - you can marvel at how such a place was built. Certainly a memorable experience and in October perfect weather to visit.

We caught a bus tour to Mt Montserrat after booking this trip on the internet using trip advisor. We found the tour company to centrally located and close to our accommodation on La Ramblas we packed a picnic lunch to have in the free time after the tour of the monastery as there were some lovely park like areas were you could relax and enjoy the views and scenery as usual we found the monastery very crowded and there were long queues for the attractions the Black Madonna taking over an hour.

This is a must-do. Take the metro to Espanya station and look for Line R5. The train you need is the one going to Manresa. You can buy combination tickets at Espanya station fo rthe mainline train plus either the cable car or cog train which takes you up to the monastery. The cable car is stunning.

Top tip - wear sensible shoes - there are loads of walks to do right at the top - you have to take the funicular railway which only takes 5 minutes. Didn't queue for the monastery (where the Virgin Mary is supposed to have visited). Not many places to eat or drink unless you like horrible buffet style in a room with no windows and about 500 coach parties joining you.

Our advice - take a picnic, spend the day walking, enjoy the scenery. You will not be disappointed.

Carved into the jagged cliffs, this was a fantastic day trip from Barcelona. Give the age of our travel companions, we used a rental car, but I would have preferred public transport. The monastery is beautiful.
